Trip to Oklahoma Opens Dual Play for No. 14 Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 14-ranked Ohio State women's tennis team begins its dual season with two road matches vs. Top 15 opponents this weekend. The Buckeyes will face No. 13 Oklahoma at 6 p.m. ET Friday in Norman, Okla., and No. 5 Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. ET Sunday in Stillwater, Okla.

Buckeyes vs. Cowgirls
- The Buckeyes are 4-2 all-time vs. Oklahoma State.
- The teams faced off in Columbus the last two seasons.
- On Feb. 2, 2023, Ohio State posted a 4-3 win. Oklahoma State won the doubles point before the Buckeyes took the first three singles matches in straight sets for a 3-1 lead, with Sydni Ratliff, Irina Cantos Siemers and Shelly Bereznyak all picking up wins. The Cowgirls won the next match in three sets for a 3-2 team score. Kolie Allen then prevailed in three sets to clinch the Ohio State victory. Â
- In 2022, the Cowgirls came to Columbus for ITA Kickoff Weekend, with the Buckeyes posting a 4-1 win.
- The teams met on Oklahoma State's home courts in 2020 Kickoff Weekend, a 4-3 Ohio State victory. A matchup in 2017 was at ITA National Team Indoors in New Haven, Conn., where Ohio State was a 4-3 winner and in 2016 the squads met in the NCAA Round of 16 in Tulsa, Okla., with the Cowgirls winning, 4-2. The first match was in February 2001 at ITA National Team Indoors, a 5-2 Oklahoma State win in Madison, Wis.
- The Cowgirls will open their season Friday when they host No. 4 Michigan.
- Five Oklahoma State players are ranked in singles – No. 2 Ange Oby Kajuru, No. 13 Anastasiya Komar, No. 53 Lucia Peyre, No. 60 Ayumi Miyamoto and No. 62 Safiya Carrington. In doubles, Kajuru and Komar are ranked sixth, with Komar and Raquel Gonzales No. 12.

- Ohio State is 2-2 all-time vs. Oklahoma.
- Last year, the teams met in Columbus Feb. 2, 2022 to open the Buckeyes' schedule and Ohio State posted a 5-2 win. The Sooners captured the doubles point but Shelly Bereznyak, Lucia Marzal, Irina Cantos Siemers, Sydni Ratliff and Kolie Allen all posted singles wins, with four of the five in straight sets.
- The teams faced off in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at Vanderbilt in 2015, a 4-3 OU victory.
- Oklahoma won 4-0 Feb. 27, 2011 at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala., and the Buckeyes took the first match between the squads 6-1 Jan. 26, 2008 in a neutral site match in Milwaukee, Wis.
- The Sooners are 2-0 this year after downing Wichita State and Wyoming last weekend at home.
- In the ITA rankings, Oklahoma has four ranked singles players – No. 16 Florencia Urrutia, No. 37 Dana Guzman, No. 72 Alina Shcherbinina and No. 112 Ava Catanzarite, with two ranked doubles teams – No. 2 Shcherbinina and Guzman and No. 34 Julia Garcia and Zdena Safarova.

- Ohio State has two players ranked in singles and two ranked doubles teams in the ITA rankings.
- Irina Cantos Siemers is No. 15 in singles, with Luciana Perry No. 85. In doubles, Cantos Siemers pairs with Sydni Ratliff as the No. 17-ranked team and Cantos Siemers and Perry are No. 21.
- Eight non-conference opponents on the Buckeye schedule were ranked in the ITA Top 25 to start the year.
- Ohio State returned to the courts with the Michigan Invitational last weekend. Teah Chavez led the Buckeyes with a 5-0 record combined, with two singles and three doubles victories. Dani Schoenly was 3-0 combined, with two singles victories, and Audrey Spencer picked up two singles wins and a doubles victory. Madeline Atway was 3-0 in doubles over the weekend for Ohio State.Â
- During tournament play, Irina Cantos Siemers posted a team-best 12 wins, while Luciana Perry and Teah Chavez each had 11 victories. Luciana Perry was first with 12 doubles victories, followed by Chavez (11) and Cantos Siemers (10).
- Cantos Siemers picked up her 100th career singles win in the fall, becoming one of just five Buckeyes with triple-digit wins. She now has 108 total singles wins, four shy of the program record 112 recorded by Miho Kowase from 2014-17. Her 190 combined singles/doubles wins rank fifth all-time, with Kowase first (213).
- Ohio State was 22-8 last season, finishing second in the Big Ten regular season and as the runner-up in the conference tournament. The Buckeyes were the No. 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament and hosted NCAA first and second round matches, posting two wins to advance to the Super Regionals, where they fell to Stanford.
The Schedule Ahead
- Next weekend, Ohio State will again host ITA Kickoff Weekend matches. Jan. 26, the first round features the Buckeyes vs. Notre Dame at 10 a.m. and Kansas vs. Arizona State at 1 p.m., with championship and consolation matches Jan. 27 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. The site winner will advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
- From February through April, the Buckeyes will host nine regular season matches in Columbus, with seven road matches on the schedule. FULL SCHEDULE
