Makenna Webster scores and assists on a goal in the win
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team built a 2-0 lead through three quarters and then staved off a late Bucknell rally to run its season-opening winning streak to four games on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over the Bison.
The Short Story
Senior forward Makenna Webster had a hand in each goal for Ohio State (4-0), scoring the first late in the opening quarter and then assisting on another in the third quarter. Bucknell (1-3) would score to cut the lead to 2-1 with just over four minutes remaining but could get no closer.
Ohio State's defense limited Bucknell to just six total shots through the first three quarters (three of which were on goal) and Ohio State outcornered the Bison 11-4. Buckeye goalkeeper Abby Danson made three saves.
How The Goals Were Scored
Webster got into the scoring column for the third consecutive game with just 11 seconds remaining in the first quarter. She worked around a defender and then eluded goalkeeper Sarah Althouse to shoot into an open cage.
Just after halftime, Webster again created a scoring opportunity when she sent a cross from the left side to a waiting Hallie Brost, who tapped it in and netted her second goal of the season to make the score 2-0.
Bucknell's lone goal of the afternoon came off the stick of Isabella Pavlides, who tapped in a pass in close range from Kari Melberger.
Buckeye This and That
With her three-point afternoon, Webster currently leads the team in scoring with 13 points, all of which have come in the last three games.
The Buckeyes outshot their opponent for the fourth consecutive game.
Sunday's match was the fourth and final of the 2023 Buckeye Invitational. To start the day, New Hampshire defeated Ball State, 4-1.
Ohio State was the only team to win each of their games this weekend as part of the invitational.
The Buckeyes' 4-0 start is their best since also winning four consecutive games to begin the 2008 season.
Prior to that, the team's best start was in 2006 when it was 8-0.
Eight different players have scored goals this year and four players have two or more goals.
