9/4/2023 4:36:00 PM | General, Field Hockey
Brenna Bough and Makenna Webster each score twice in the victory
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State's fifth win of the season looked a lot like its first four. The Buckeyes got goals from three different players and outshot UC Davis 32-4 in a decisive 5-0 victory on Monday afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field. Ohio State is now 5-0 on the season while UC Davis is 1-5.
The Short Story
Senior forward Makenna Webster did what she's done all year long – find the scoring column. She scored twice – one in the first quarter and then again in the third – while freshman Brenna Bough had the first multi-goal game of her career. The freshman from Whitney Point, N.Y. found the back of the cage in the second quarter (21:36) and fourth quarter (55:28).
Zella Bailey had the fifth and final goal of the day in the 59th minute. On the other end of the field, two goalies saw action on Monday. Abby Danson started and made three saves (two in the first quarter, one in the third). Sophomore Kelly Davis played the final 6:45 of the fourth quarter, the first game action in her career.
How The Goals Were Scored
· All five of the Buckeyes' goals on Monday were unassisted. It started 11:06 into the first quarter when Webster cleaned up a rebound in front of the goal for a 1-0 Ohio State lead.
· In the second quarter, Bough worked around a defender and shot past goalie Sarah Lopez from close range. It was the first goal of Bough's collegiate career.
· Webster made it a two-goal day just 41 seconds into the second half as she worked around a defender and converted a backhanded shot over the goalkeeper's shoulder.
· Bough's fourth-quarter goal was off a loose scramble in front of the cage, as was Bailey's, which came after she intercepted a UC Davis pass in Ohio State's offensive zone.
