LANSING, Mich. – In their series opener with Michigan State (17-9, 5-2 Big Ten) on Friday evening, the Buckeyes (14-14, 1-6 Big Ten) were defeated by the Spartans, 7-1.

Game Recap

Kade Kern had the first hit of the game for the Buckeyes in the first inning, singling through the left side with one out on the board, but the Spartans turned a double play to end the top half.
The Spartans scored twice in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead over Ohio State.
Michigan State added two more runs in the bottom of the second to extend its lead to four runs, 4-0.
In the top of the third, Josh McAlister and Kern were both walked, but there was nothing else doing for the Buckeyes as they remained behind the Spartans, 4-0.
In the top of the fifth, Trey Lipsey hit a one-out single, but he was stranded on base.
Michigan State scored on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead over the Buckeyes.
Caden Kaiser was walked with two outs in the top of the sixth. An RBI double from Matthew Graveline scored Kaiser and left Ohio State trailing by four, 5-1.
The Spartans were retired in order in the bottom of the sixth and the Buckeyes turned a double play to end the seventh.
Michigan State got ahead by six, 7-1, after scoring twice in the bottom of the eighth frame.
The Buckeyes were retired in order in the ninth and fell to the Spartans, 7-1, in the first game of their weekend series.

Buckeyes by the Numbers

Kern, Graveline and Lipsey each had one hit and Graveline had the lone RBI for the Buckeyes.
McAlister had one stolen base.
Isaiah Coupet (3-3) took the loss. He struck out three and gave up four runs on three hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
Jake Johnson fanned three and Will Pfennig struck out two in relief appearances.
