Pasteur Reaches 1,000 Career Kills in 3-0 Sweep of Mastodons

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 13 Ohio State (18-9, 10-3) kept its win streak alive at seven-consecutive matches with a 3-0 win against visiting Purdue Fort Wayne (16-11, 7-6) Thursday at the Covelli Center. The Buckeyes face No. 10 Loyola Chicago (21-4, 11-1) Saturday (4 p.m./B1G+) in the regular-season finale.
Ohio State last won seven or more in a row during the 2018 season when the Buckeyes rattled off nine-consecutive wins from March 2-April 6. Ohio State finished 25-6 that season while advancing to the NCAA Championship match vs. Long Beach State (L, 1-3).
Jacob Pasteur led the Buckeyes with 14 kills in reaching 1,000 for his career. Shane Wetzel added 12 and Jack Stevens 11 in the win. Michael Wright was the match leader with 38 assists and eight digs.
Pasteur owns the No. 17 spot all-time at Ohio State with 1,000 career kills. He has 374 this year in 26 matches. Michael Henchy (2012-15) is up next at No. 16 on the career kills list with 1,001. Senior Samuel Clark is 20th all-time with 818 kills. Former teammate Martin Lallemand is 19th with 819, Jose Rivera (1996-00) sits in the No. 18 spot with 900.
Ohio State will honor its seniors Saturday after the match. Sam Clark, Wright and Stevens will be recognized.
How it Happened
Set 1
Ohio State took a 5-3 lead on a Michael Wright kill and extended the lead to 9-5 on a Jacob Pasteur ace and Jack Stevens kill. The Mastodons called timeout after the Buckeyes went up 12-6 on a Pasteur kill and OSU block. A pair of Stephens kills made it 16-8. A Wetzel kill led to another Purdue Fort Wayne timeout after the Buckeyes took a 19-10 lead. The Buckeyes then doubled the score at 22-11 on a Wetzel kill and Pasteur ace. After a Cole Young and Stevens block made it 24-13, Stevens got the win for the Buckeyes with a kill (25-14). The Buckeyes hit .452 in the opener while the Mastodons were held to -.037. Stevens led both teams with six kills while Wetzel added five.

Set 2
The Buckeyes started with a 4-1 lead in the second. The Mastodons rallied to go up 6-5 after a 4-1 run. A Pasteur kill, Mastodon error and Wetzel kill put the Buckeyes back up 8-6. A 6-1 Ohio State run put the Buckeyes up 11-7 before a Purdue Fort Wayne timeout. Ohio State extended the run to 12-1 on a Wetzel kill to put the Buckeyes in control 17-7. Purdue Fort Wayne called its final timeout of the set and took the next point to stop the Ohio State run. Ohio State then called a timeout after the Mastodons put a 6-1 run of their own together to cut into the Ohio State lead at 20-15. Purdue Fort Wayne kept up its effort at a comeback but the Buckeyes prevailed, 25-19. The Buckeyes hit just .182 in the win with the Mastodons hitting .120. Wetzel led both teams with 10 kills after the second set.

Set 3
Ohio State again started strong in taking a 6-2 lead aided by three Pasteur kills. Stevens and Pasteur kills made it 11-5 Buckeyes. A Wright kill put Ohio State in the lead 14-7. A 4-1 Mastodon run cut the lead to 15-11 Buckeyes. Purdue Fort Wayne called timeout after a Wright ace made it 18-11 Buckeyes. After Pasture added his 14th kill of the evening, the 1,000th of his career, the Mastodons called timeout with the Buckeyes leading 23-12. Stevens gave the Buckeyes the win in the set with the final kill of the night in a 3-0 win over the Mastodons.
