
Buckeyes Win B1G Series Versus Illinois

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State bats were hot as the Buckeye baseball team (22-22, 5-13 Big Ten) defeated Illinois (19-21, 8-10 Big Ten), 15-9, on Sunday afternoon to win the season series.
Game Recap
- The Illini got on the board first, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
- The Buckeyes quickly answered. Trey Lipsey walked to lead off the bottom of the first and single from Kade Kern advanced Lipsey to third to put runners on the corners; Kern then swiped second to put runners in scoring position. A double from Matthew Graveline drove both runners in to tie the score, 2-2. An RBI single from Cole Andrews scored Graveline and put Ohio State in the lead, 3-2.
- Illinois reclaimed the lead, 5-4, in the top of the second inning.
- A sole homerun from Hunter Rosson, his second homer of the series, left the Buckeyes trailing by just one run, 5-4, going into the third inning.

- Back-to-back doubles from Graveline and Mitchell Okuley worked to tie the score once again, 5-5, in the bottom of the third.
- Nick Erwin opened the home half of the fourth with a double to left center. A bunt single from Rosson put runners on the corners for the Buckeyes. Lipsey was next at the plate, and he singled to left field to drive in a run and put Ohio State back in the lead, 6-5. An RBI double from Marcus Ernst and an RBI groundout from Graveline gave OSU its largest lead of the game so far, 8-5. Okuley was next up and he came up big, blasting a homerun over the right field fence to send two runs across put the Buckeyes up by five, 10-5.

- With one out on the board in the bottom of the sixth, Graveline drew a walk and Okuley singled to left field. Andrews stepped up to the plate and went yard, extending Buckeyes’ lead, 13-5.

- In the bottom of the seventh frame, an RBI single from Ernst gave Ohio State a commanding seven-run lead, 14-7.
- The Illini began to pick up some offensive momentum in the top of the eighth, scoring four times to cut the Ohio State lead to five, 14-9.
- Another homerun from Andrews in the bottom of the eighth put the run count for the Buckeyes at 15.

- Pitcher Jacob Gehring and the Buckeye defense kept the Illini scoreless in the ninth and clinched the 15-9 victory and series win.
Buckeyes by the Numbers
- Andrews and Okuley led the Buckeyes with three hits apiece. Ernst, Graveline and Rosson each added two hits.
- Andrews batted in a team-high five runs, while Graveline and Okuley each batted in three.
- Graveline and Lipsey each scored three runs for the Buckeyes.
- Landon Beidelschies notched his first career start on the mound. He struck out three and gave up five runs on four hits in a 1.1-inning no-decision.
- Josh Timmerman (2-1) earned the win. He fanned three in 2.1 hitless, scoreless frames pitched.
- Gehring struck out two in 1.2 innings to close out the game.
