COLUMBUS, Ohio – Friday’s opening round of the Big Ten Championship at Galloway National Golf Club was marred by rain and cool temperatures. The average score for the field was 78.49 and the Buckeyes would end up posting a 300 and sit in fourth place.
Junior Maxwell Moldovan had to feel like he played two different rounds on Friday. He was bogey-free and 4-under par through his first 12 holes but was 6-over the rest of the way to finish with a 2-over 73. That was best on the team and has him in tie for fourth, just three shots back of Illinois’ Matthis Besard who was the only player to break par on the day.
Senior Jackson Chandler is a shot behind Moldovan at 3-over par. He played his final 10 holes at just 1-over par, which was the tougher end of the round. Neal Shipley was 3-over through the first five holes, and like Chandler, played well over the back part of the round. He was just 1-over through his last 13 holes and posted a 4-over 75.
Adam Wallin opened the tournament with a 7-over 78 and JonErik Alford was a shot behind him with a 79.
Illinois led the way on day one with an 8-over 292. Northwestern is second at 14-over, Wisconsin is third at 15-over and then the Buckeyes in fourth at 16-over. Ohio State will start the second round at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning, paired with Iowa and Indiana.
