
Buckeyes Advance to MIVA Final with 3-1 Win Over McKendree

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 3-seed Ohio State (21-9) advanced to the 2023 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament title match with a 3-1 win over No. 7 seed McKendree (7-16) Wednesday at the Covelli Center. Ohio State will travel to face No. 1 Ball State Saturday after the Cardinals defeated No. 4 Lewis 3-0 in the other MIVA semifinal
The last time Ohio State advanced to the MIVA title match was in 2018. The Buckeyes took their third-consecutive tournament title that season.
Shane Wetzel led the Buckeyes with a career-high tying 19 kills while Jacob Pasteur added 16. Jack Stevens had 11 kills and Thomas Poole led both teams with 11 digs.
Senior Michael Wright finished with 48 assists to lead both teams.
The last time the Buckeyes won 10 or more consecutive matches was in 2017 when Ohio State opened the season with 19-victories before a loss. The Buckeyes also ended the year on a nine-match win streak in earning the NCAA Title with a 37-2 record.

How it Happened
Set 1
McKendree scored the first two before the Buckeyes went on a 4-1 run to take a 4-3 lead. The Bearcats tied it at 5-all and after a 5-1 of their own, claimed an 8-5 advantage. A Jacob Pasteur kill tied it at 9-all after a 4-1 Ohio State run. The Buckeyes went on top 11-10 on a Pasteur, Justin Howard block and after a 6-1 run led 12-10. Back-to-back Shane Wetzel kills put the Buckeyes up 15-13. McKendree called timeout after Wetzel again posted consecutive kills to put Ohio State up 17-14. Kills by Jack Stevens, Pasteur and Cole Young put OSU up 20-15. The Buckeyes then closed out the set on a 3-1 run to win 25-20. Wetzel and Pasteur each had six kills in the opener while the Buckeyes hit .389. Pasteur went over 400 kills for the season in the set.

Set 2
After the Buckeyes started with a 3-1 lead, McKendree tied it at 3-all. The teams began to trade points until consecutive points put the Buckeyes in the lead 9-7. The Bearcats responded with the next three points for a 10-9 lead. A 5-1 run made it 12-10 McKendree before a Pasteur kill cut the Bearcat lead to 12-11. Ohio State tied it at 14-all after a Stevens kill and Bearcat error. McKendree scored the next three to go up 17-14. Ohio State called timeout but the Bearcats continued on their 5-0 run to lead 19-14 before a second timeout by the Buckeyes. A Michael Wright kill ended the run and started the Buckeyes on a 3-0 point streak to cut it to 19-17. The Bearcats called timeout and went up 23-19 before taking the set 25-21. Wetzel led after two with 10 kills. The Bearcats outhit the Buckeye .296-.286 in the set.

Set 3
Pasteur got the Buckeyes started with a kill on a Bearcat overpass to start an 14-1 run to open the third. McKendree called its second timeout of the set after another Pasteur kill made it 9-1 Buckeyes. An Ohio State error ended an 11-0 Ohio State run to make it 14-2 Buckeyes. A 4-1 Ohio State run made it 18-3 Buckeyes. Ohio State finished off the set to take a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-9 win. Wetzel led both teams with 16 kills while Pasteur was up to 10. The Buckeyes hit .650 in the set while holding the Bearcats to a .000 hitting percentage.

Set 4
After the Bearcats started 2-0, Pasteur tied it with a pair of kills. Ohio State took the lead at 5-4 on a Young and Stevens block. A Howard kill put the Buckeyes up 10-7. McKendree called timeout after a Wetzel kill put Ohio State up 13-9. Ohio State built the lead to 18-9 after a 7-0 run. McKendree then called its final timeout but the Buckeyes kept up the pressure to double up the Bearcats 20-10 on kills by Wetzel and Pasteur. Ohio State took the set, 25-15, to win the match 3-1 and advance to the 2023 MIVA Title match Saturday at Ball State.
