
No. 3 Buckeyes Prepare for Match against Penn State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 3 Ohio State women’s tennis team will kick off Big Ten play with a noon match vs. Penn State Saturday at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center in Columbus. Admission and parking are free to all Ohio State regular season home matches.
The Buckeyes are 7-4 this season, with the Nittany Lions 8-5 (0-1 B1G).

Buckeyes vs. Nittany Lions
- Ohio State holds a record of 36-17 against Penn State and has not lost a match to the Nittany Lions since 2013
- In last year’s dual between the teams in State College, Pa., Ohio State swept Penn State, 7-0. The Buckeyes won four singles matches in straight sets, one in a super tiebreaker and one by retirement.
- Penn State, ranked 41st by the ITA this week, swept a doubleheader at home Sunday, topping James Madison and Duquesne. The squad opened Big Ten play with a 4-0 loss at Illinois Feb. 19.
- In the ITA singles rankings, Sofiya Chekhlystova is ranked 42nd.
In the Rankings
- For the third week in a row, Ohio State was in the Top 10 of the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. The squad was ranked sixth in the final coaches poll. Two weeks ago, in the first computer rankings, Ohio State was second and the squad is No. 3 this week.
- The Buckeyes have five wins against teams currently in the Top 25 – No. 5 Auburn, No. 6 Georgia, No. 12 Tennessee, No. 18 Oklahoma and No. 19 Arizona State
- Three Buckeyes and a doubles team were in the ITA singles rankings released last Tuesday. Sydni Ratliff was No. 22, Irina Cantos Siemers was No. 33 and Shelly Bereznyak was No. 105. The duo of Cantos Siemers and Ratliff were No. 11.
Buckeye This and That
- Ohio State is the defending Big Ten regular season champion after going undefeated in league play last season (11-0). The squad shared the 2021 title with a 15-1 B1G mark.
- The Buckeyes have finished in the Top 5 in the Big Ten every year since 2013 and won conference regular season championships in 2016, 2017, 2021 and 2022.
- Shelly Bereznyak is 7-1 in singles dual matches this season, with her first loss of the spring in three sets to Texas A&M Sunday.
- Lucia Marzal is 7-1 in the spring and enters the match vs. Penn State on a four-match winning streak.
- In doubles overall this season, Cantos Siemers has a team-high 13 wins in pairings with Sydni Ratliff, Kolie Allen and Akanksha Bhan. Cantos Siemers and Allen lead the squad with six dual match wins in doubles this spring.
- In singles, Ohio State has compiled a team-best 7-1 singles record on both courts five and six to lead the team. They have compiled six wins on court four and are 8-1 in doubles on court three.
- The Buckeyes are 6-1 on their home courts this season.
- Ohio State is coming off tough losses to Top 10 teams last week. The squad fell at home to No. 9 NC State last Wednesday, 4-3, before a 5-2 loss against No. 7 Texas A&M in Orlando Sunday.
The Schedule Ahead
- The Buckeye squad will head to Los Angeles to face UCLA at 3 p.m. ET March 12.
- The showdown against UCLA is part of a two-match West Coast series that also features a match at No. 25 Pepperdine at 4 p.m. ET March 14.
- After its California trip, Ohio State will open a three-match homestand vs. Big Ten foes, as it hosts Wisconsin March 17, Minnesota March 19 and Purdue March 24.
- Admission is free to all regular season home matches and live video and scoring will be available.
