
Buckeyes Power Their Way to a Sweep of Charleston Southern

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team ran its winning streak to a season-high five games thanks to a doubleheader sweep of Charleston Southern on Tuesday evening in Charleston, S.C. The Buckeyes improved to 11-7 on the season and have won eight of their last 10 games.
The Short Story
Destinee Noury hit three home runs on the night – including the go-ahead shot in the top of the ninth inning of the first game – while Melina Wilkson went 5-for-5 in the second game with a two-run home run. Overall, Ohio State hit five home runs on the night, as Noury blasted two more in the second game while Wilksion and Meggie Otte each blasted one.
Junior Allison Smith struck out a career-high 13 batters in the first game while Emily Ruck fanned five over 6.0 innings in the second game to get her third win of the season.
Ohio State 2, Charleston Southern 1 – Game Notes
- Kaitlyn Farley broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning with a one-out single up the middle that scored pinch runner Lindsey Potter.
- In the bottom half of the fifth, however, the Buccaneers answered back with a two-out run scoring single to tie the game at 1-all.
- That's how it stayed well into extra innings, and after the Buckeyes were able to get out of a jam with a double play that ended the eighth inning, Noury's solo home run with two outs in the ninth gave Ohio State the lead for good at 2-1.
- The Buckeyes' eight hits came from eight different players.
- Noury's home run in the ninth inning was the first of her career.
Ohio State 13, Charleston Southern 2 – Game Notes
- Ohio State set a season high for runs (13) and hits (16) while matching it season-best of four home runs.
- Wilkison's 5-for-5 game included three runs scored and three RBI. She hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to give Ohio State a 5-2 lead.
- The last – and only other – Ohio State player to have five hits in a game was Cheryl Palaroan versus Penn State in 1999 (she went 5-for-6).
- Kami Kortokrax also went 3-for-4 with a double while Meggie Otte drove in three runs.
- Ohio State busted the game open in the top of the seventh inning when seven runs scored and 10 total batters went to the plate.
- Noury finished the day 3-for-6 with three home runs and five RBI.
- Not to be outdone, Wilkison was 6-for-9 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored.
- Tuesday's doubleheader last nearly six hours, as the first game was 2:44 while the second game took 2:29 to complete.
