
No. 4 Buckeyes Set for Two Matches in California

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 4 Ohio State women’s tennis team heads to California for matches against UCLA and No. 7 Pepperdine. The Buckeyes will take on the Bruins in Los Angeles at 3 p.m. ET Sunday and will face the Waves at 4 p.m. ET Tuesday in Malibu.
Ohio State comes into the road trip with a record of 8-4, while UCLA is 4-3 and Pepperdine is 7-2 before hosting USC Saturday.

Buckeyes vs. UCLA
- UCLA and Ohio State have met twice, facing off in the 2001 season and in the 2016 NCAA Tournament second round in Columbus.
- The last time the teams met, Ohio State took the match 4-1 to complete an undefeated home season and advance to the NCAA Round of 16.
- In 2001, Ohio State was a 5-2 winner over the Bruins at ITA National Team Indoors in Madison, Wis.
- In the ITA singles rankings, UCLA’s Fangran Tian is No. 63, Ava Catanzarite is No. 76 and Kimmi Hance is No. 95.
Buckeyes vs. Pepperdine
- The Buckeyes are 3-1 all-time vs. Pepperdine.
- Ohio State and Pepperdine are both ranked in the Top 10 coming into their match for the second year in a row. Last year, the Buckeyes were No. 4 when the No. 8 Waves came to Columbus.
- While Pepperdine took the doubles point in last year’s match, the Buckeyes were led by Kolie Allen, Isabelle Boulais and Irina Cantos, who each won their singles match in straight sets en route to a 5-2 Ohio State win.
- The squads also met in 2017, with the Buckeyes posting a 6-1 victory in Tempe, Ariz., and in 2016 when Ohio State won 4-3 to open ITA Kickoff Weekend in Fort Worth, Texas. The teams first met in 2001, a 6-1 victory by the Waves at ITA National Team Indoors in Madison, Wis.
- In the ITA singles rankings, Janice Tjen is No. 11, Savannah Broadus is No. 19 and Lisa Zaar is No. 32. This week, the tandem of Broadus and Tjen is the top-ranked doubles team in the nation. Zaar and Bunyawi Thamchaiwat are ranked 38th.
In the Rankings
- For the fourth week in a row, Ohio State is in the Top 10 of the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. The squad is now No. 4, in the third week of computer rankings.
- The Buckeyes have four wins against teams currently in the Top 25 – No. 3 Georgia, No. 7 Auburn, No. 16 Tennessee and No. 20 Oklahoma.
- Three Buckeyes and a doubles team were in this week’s ITA rankings. Irina Cantos Siemers jumped to No. 20 after previously being slotted at No. 33 two weeks ago. Sydni Ratliff is now No. 28 and Shelly Bereznyak is No. 94. As a doubles team, Cantos Siemers and Ratliff are ranked 17th this week.
Buckeye This and That
- These will be Ohio State’s first non-neutral site matches outside of the Ty Tucker Tennis Center of the season. Last year, the Buckeyes were 7-3 in road matches.
- The Buckeyes have faced teams ranked in the Top 25 at the time of the match 10 times this season, including five matches vs. teams in the Top 10.
- Shelly Bereznyak and Lucia Marzal are both 8-1 in singles dual matches this season. Marzal is on a five-match winning streak that started against Michigan Feb. 12.
- Kolie Allen leads the squad in dual doubles play this spring. She has seven wins in pairings with Kathleen Jones and Danielle Wilson. She and Wilson have won three doubles matches in a row.
- Ohio State is coming off a shutout of Penn State to open Big Ten play Saturday in Columbus.
The Schedule Ahead
- After its California trip, Ohio State will host Big Ten foes Wisconsin, Minnesota and Purdue.
- The three-match homestand begins vs. Wisconsin next Friday (March 17) at 6 p.m. The Buckeyes will take on Minnesota at 11 a.m. March 19 and Purdue at 3 p.m. March 24.
