CLEMSON, S.C. – Ohio State’s weekend in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge came to a close on Sunday with a 10-0 loss to the sixth-ranked Tigers at McWhorther Stadium. The Buckeyes are 3-5 on the season and so far through eight games have played six games against teams that are either ranked or receiving votes.
The Tigers got off to a fast start, hitting three first-inning home runs to take a 4-0 lead before the Buckeyes had a chance to bat. Entering the weekend, Clemson was third in the country in home runs per game (2.00).
Kennedy Kay came in relief of starting pitcher Emily Ruck and recorded the final three outs of the first inning and then got out of the second inning via a 1-4-6-3 double play. After not recording a double play during the first weekend of play, the Buckeyes had three this weekend.
Clemson tacked on a run in the top of the third via a bunt single that scored Julia Bomhardt, who had come in as a pinch runner for Aby Vieira. The Tigers threatened to add more with the bases loaded, but Kay got a fly out to center field that ended the inning.
The Tigers’ fourth home run of the game opened an 8-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. In that frame, freshman pitcher Julia Miller entered the circle and made her collegiate debut. She recorded the final two outs of the inning, including her first career strikeout.
