
Buckeyes Fall to UMD in Overtime, 5-4

COLUMBUS, Ohio – It took 63:37 to decide game two of the series between No. 1 Ohio State and No. 8 Minnesota Duluth Saturday evening at Amsoil Arena, but it was the Bulldogs who ultimately came away with a 5-4 victory over the Buckeyes. Ohio State (14-2-2, 13-2-1 WCHA) earned one point in the conference standings for the overtime loss to finish the weekend with four points over Minnesota Duluth (12-6-0, 6-6-0 WCHA).
How it Happened
After giving up two goals in the first 10 minutes of play on Saturday, Ohio State continued to fight back and tie the game three times before falling in overtime to the Bulldogs.
Minnesota Duluth scored a pair of goals within a minute of each other at 8:49 and 9:37 to start off the game. Ohio State’s Gabby Rosenthal responded with the team’s first goal of the day at 10:59 to cut Duluth’s advantage to one goal. A tally from Sophie Jaques at 10:13 in the second period tied the game at two, but the teams went on to trade goals for the remainder of the game with the Bulldogs earning the final strike.
The power play proved crucial to the Buckeyes this game, as they scored two of their three game-tying goals with the one-skater advantage. Jaques, who is the nation’s leading power play scorer, evened the game at 2-2 in the second period on Ohio State’s second power play opportunity of the day. Rosenthal went on to score her second goal on the Buckeyes’ final power play to tie the game at 4-4 with 5:24 to play in regulation, sending the teams to overtime.
Makenna Webster recorded the Buckeyes’ third goal of the day, diving on a rebounded shot from Jaques at 2:39 in the third period. She was preceded by a goal from UMD’s Nina Jobst-Smith at 17:55 in the second period and followed by a goal from the Bulldogs’ Kylie Hanley at 8:55 in the third.
It was the Duluth’s Clara Van Wieren who eventually scored the game-winning goal at 3:37 into the five-minute overtime for the Bulldogs.
Game Notes
- Saturday’s game marked the fifth consecutive matchup between the Buckeyes and Bulldogs that has been decided by one goal.
- The game was the fifth of the year that Ohio State has scored multiple power play goals. Sophie Jaques added her eighth power play goal of the season to keep her as the top power play scorer in the country.
- Gabby Rosenthal led the Buckeyes with three points and two goals in the game. She recorded her third multi-goal game of the season.
- Raygan Kirk earned her third consecutive start for the Buckeyes in Saturday’s loss. She made 27 saves for the Buckeyes in the contest.
- Jaques led the team with three blocked shots and seven shots on goal on the night.
