Ohio State Earns 4-3 Win in Series-Opener at Cornell

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 1 Ohio State women’s hockey team earned its second non-conference win of the season with a 4-3 victory over No. 10 Cornell Saturday night at Lynah Rink. Graduate forward Paetyn Levis tallied the game-winning goal, and her 100th career point, in the win and the Buckeyes’ top line of forwards Jenn Gardiner, Gabby Rosenthal and Makenna Webster combined for eight points.
How it Happened
- Ohio State struck first for the 14th time this season, with Jenn Gardiner earning the opening tally at 5:20 into the game. Sophie Jaques sent a shot on goal to start the play and the rebound was handled by Webster then Rosenthal before Gardiner ultimately found the back of the net.
- Amanda Thiele earned the start in goal for the Buckeyes on Saturday, making four stops in the first period to keep Cornell off the board.
- Ohio State started the second period by killing off the remaining 11 seconds of a late first period interference penalty. The team went on to kill two more penalties, including a 3-on-5 situation, as it continued to keep the Big Red scoreless.
- Makenna Webster extended the Buckeye lead to two-goals, lighting the lamp at 11:59. Again, it was Jaques who sent the original shot on goal, and Webster knocked the rebound past Cornell netminder Belle Mende. Gardiner earned the second assist.
- Cornell recorded its first goal of the game less than a minute later with a power play goal from Gillis Frenchette at 12:44 in the second period.
- The Buckeyes and Big Red each scored one more goal before the period ended. Rosenthal responded to Cornell’s power play goal with one for the Buckeyes at 16:23. Cornell’s Izzy Daniel snuck one past Thiele with 36 seconds to play in the period, but Ohio State held a 3-2 lead into the final intermission.
- The game-winning goal came from Levis at 12:33 in the third period. She rushed into the Big Red zone and took a shot from the top of the faceoff circle left Mende. Levis was credited with the goal as her shot was mishandled in the goal crease and knocked into the net by a Cornell defenseman.
- The Big Red made a final push to tie the game, pulling Mende with 2:46 to play and scoring on the man-up opportunity as the clock hit 1:27. Ohio State halted the comeback attempt as Thiele made her 18th and final save of the day with 48 seconds remaining.
Game Notes
- Levis is the 15th Ohio State skater in program history to reach the century milestone. There are now three current Buckeye student-athletes – Levis, Jaques and Emma Maltais – who have recorded at least 100 career points.
- Ohio State’s top line of Gardiner, Rosenthal and Webster were responsible for eight of Ohio State’s 11 points on the day. Including the assist from top-line defenseman Jaques, the Buckeyes’ starting lineup tallied nine points total.
- With two points against Cornell on Saturday, Rosenthal has recorded a point in 15 of her 17 games played this season.
- With the win, Ohio State handed Cornell its first home loss of the season. The Buckeyes improve to 8-1-0 on the road this year.
- Thiele made her 11th start of the season between the pipes for Ohio State, improving her record to 9-1-1.
- Ohio State tallied multiple power play goals for the sixth time this season. Saturday marked the second consecutive game that the Buckeyes have scored twice on the power play, with the team earning the same feat in the last game against Minnesota Duluth (Dec. 3).
- The Buckeyes improve to 2-0-1 against non-conference opponents this year with the victory over Cornell. Ohio State is also 5-2-2 against ranked opponents for the 2022-23 season.
