COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 21st-ranked Ohio State field hockey team was in search of a signature win, and on Friday afternoon it found it. The Buckeyes (8-5, 2-3 Big Ten) knocked off No. 5 Iowa, 2-0, and ran their winning streak to five consecutive games. The Hawkeyes are now 10-4 and 3-3 in Big Ten play.
The Short Story
Against one of the best defensive teams in the nation, Ohio State was able to generate just three shots. But, the Buckeyes made their opportunities count, as Leanne Bough scored a second-quarter goal off a penalty corner and Sarah Charley scored in transition in the third quarter to make the score 2-0.
That was all the offense goalie Abby Danson needed, as she finished with her fifth shutout of the season and made seven saves in the victory. Danson was aided by a fourth-quarter defensive save from Grace Kim to preserve the shutout.
How It Happened
- After a scoreless first quarter that saw Iowa get four shots off – three of which were on goal – Ohio State cashed in on their one – and only – penalty corner of the afternoon.
- Leanne Bough sent a shot into the right corner of the goal off assists from Grace Kim and Hallie Brost.
- The score remained 1-0 through halftime, and midway through the third quarter Sarah Charley gave Ohio State a key insurance goal. She took a pass from near midfield off the stick of Makenna Webster and converted on a one-on-one opportunity against Iowa goalie Grace McGuire.
- It was the team-leading ninth goal of the season for Charley, who has scored five times in the last three games.
- Danson made four fourth-quarter saves and was aided by Kim's defensive save to keep Iowa off the scoreboard.
