COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a game that came down to the final thirty seconds, the No. 2 Ohio State women’s hockey team fell to No. 8 Minnesota Duluth, 1-0, at the OSU Ice Rink on Friday. The Buckeyes fall to 17-4 on the year while the Bulldogs improve to 14-7.
How it Happened
The game was scoreless for a total of 59:28 on Friday night. After the first two periods, Minnesota Duluth held a 21-14 shot advantage over the Buckeyes, but Ohio State refused to back down. The team blocked 15 shots in the first two frames with goaltender Amanda Thiele making 21 saves.
The third period saw the Buckeyes take 13 shots to Minnesota Duluth’s seven with numerous opportunities to capitalize off of, but nothing fell past the Bulldog goal line. With just 0:32 to play in regulation, Minnesota Duluth snuck one past Thiele to bring the game to 1-0.
The Buckeyes did not go down without a fight, though, as Sophie Jaques sent one towards the Bulldog cage as time expired. The puck went in the goal, but not before the final buzzer sounded.
Game Notes
- Ohio State was held scoreless for the first time in 32 games. The last time the Buckeyes did not record a goal in a game was against Minnesota Duluth on 1/15/2021.
- Lexi Templeman played in her 150th career game on Friday night. She has played in 19 games this season for the Buckeyes after transferring from Robert Morris. In her career as a Buckeye, she has recorded five goals and one assist.
- Lauren Bernard led the team with six blocked shots in the game. Jenn Gardiner and Sophie Jaques took a team-high five shots on the day.
- Amanda Thiele earned her eighth start of her career in game one against the Bulldogs. She is now 7-1-0 in her Buckeye career.
- The Buckeyes have allowed just one goal by its opponents in five games this season. The team has held its opponents to one or zero goals on nine occasions this year.
- With the loss, the Buckeyes’ home win streak ends at 10 games, the longest home win streak in program history. The streak bests the previous record from the 2017-18 season by two games.
