COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State travelled with a squad of virtually all middle distance and distance runners to the Indiana Big Ten Invite No. 2 in Bloomington, Ind. Friday. The event was set up as a two-day meet, but was changed to a one-day – Friday only – meet late this week because of the pending inclement weather forecast for the Midwest on Saturday.
Regardless, it ended up being a two-day meet. The weather hit Friday, anyway, causing two meet delays and extending the meet past the Eastern midnight hour and into Saturday morning.
What blew through Bloomington from the East, however, were some terrific performances by the Buckeyes. No. 1 was the 3,000-meter steeplechase of sophomore Allie Guaguenti, from Powell, Ohio. Guaguenti was second in the 11-runner field in a school-record smashing time of 10:11.86 to top Sarah Kanney's two-year-old record of 10:21.02.
Junior Nick Miller and senior Frank Hayes went one-two in the 800 meters, with Miller winning and setting a new personal best of 1:48.86 while Hayes wasn't far off his best with a time of 1:50.01.
Senior Mary Figler ran a fine, 2:08.14 time in the 800 meters to earn a podium finish – third-place – in a crowded, 30-runner field on the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex.
Miller came back to lead five Buckeyes with personal bests in the 1,500, finishing 11th out of 44 runners in 3:48.17. The four other Buckeyes with personal bests in the 1,500: Tom Sullivan (3:54.46), Jake Wickert (3:55.26), Steve Bauers (3:58.12) and Eric Halford (3:59.47).
Four Buckeyes set personal bests in the 5,000, including two under 17 minutes: Addie Engel, who finished 2nd in 16:26.38, and Daniella Santos (7th in 16:48.26). The other PRs went to Ellie Weber (17:46.69) and Emma Hoellrich (18:29.31).
There were three personal bests in the men's 5,000: Zubin Jha was 7th in 14:48.95; Zach Schultz 9th in 14:55.69 and Jack Good was 12th in 15:09.46.
In some really late night racing, Andrea Kuhn and Hannah Moulton each raced for 35 minutes after 11 p.m. Eastern! And less than a second separated their finishes. Kuhn was 7th in the 10,000 meters in 35:38.77 and Moulton was 8th in 35:39.73.
Tevin Brown and Peter Hayden started their 10,000 meters after midnight Eastern and they finished fifth and sixth in 30:58.23 and 31:21.27, respectively.
Earlier Friday night, the only two field event performers to compete in Bloomington were pole vaulters Abbey Kuhn and AnneMarie Moses. Both tied their personal bests; Kuhn clearing 3.75m/12-3 1/2 and Moses clearing 3.60m/11-9 3/4.
