COLUMBUS, Ohio – On a historical day when one Ohio State Buckeye won a national championship, three others competed in preliminary rounds for an opportunity at a national championship on Saturday at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, being held in Fayetteville, Ark., at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
Anavia Battle and Allie Guagenti starred for the Buckeyes in preliminary heats this evening. First-time NCAA championships participant Guagenti, a sophomore, qualified for the finals in the mile with a personal best time of 4:38.73. She'll compete in the mile final Saturday at 7 p.m. EST.
Battle, a senior and a five-time Big Ten champion making a third NCAA championships appearance, qualified for the finals in the 200 with a time of 22.90. She qualified third, overall, and will compete for a national title Saturday evening at 7:50 p.m. EST.
Tyler Johnson, the Big Ten's 400- and 200-meter champion and owner of the fastest time in the 400 this year, did not advance out of the prelims as he placed 14th overall in a time of 46.76.
Adelaide Aquilla is Ohio State's latest national champion, winning the shot put today with a school record throw of 18.12m / 59-5 ½ to top a field of 16 other competitors and earn the women's team 10 points, which leaves them in a tie for ninth-place after Day 2 of the competition.
There's more Buckeye action slated for Saturday. Clarence Foote-Talley, the two-time Big Ten runner-up in the triple jump and only a sophomore, will compete for the first time in his specialty and enters the competition with the nation's ninth-longest jump (16.26m / 53-4 ¼).
And Johnson will be part of a men's 4×400-meter relay team that also includes senior Frank Hayes and sophomores Donnie James, Jr. and Evan Matthews.
