PALM COAST, Fla. – Ohio State finished 2-2 at the 2021 Big Ten Match Play Championship, splitting a pair of matches each day. The Buckeyes beat Maryland 3-2 in Saturday's morning match and then fell 3.5-1.5 in the afternoon to Rutgers.
Sophomore Jackson Chandler led the Buckeyes on the weekend with a perfect 3-0 record. Freshman Adam Wallin beat Maryland's Will Celiberti 3&1 on Saturday morning and halved his other two matches to finish 1-0-2. Graduate student Elis Svard played the top spot in all four matches and finished with a record of 2-2.
The Buckeyes will return to action in a little over a week at the Kiawah Classic which is being played Feb. 14-16 at the Oak Point Golf Club at the Kiawah Island Resort.
Maryland Match
The Buckeyes opened the day with a second consecutive 3-2 victory. Elis Svard won the first hole of his match with Christian Park and never looked back in a 5&4 victory. Jackson Chandler and William Koras had an interesting back and forth match as there were just four halved holes through the first 16. With Chandler leading 2-up, he birdied the 223-yard par-3 12th to close out the match 2&1.
Freshman Adam Wallin doubled the par-4 15th right out of the gate to fall 1-down. He then won the 16th and 18th holes to take a 1-up lead and never trailed the rest of the match, beating Will Celiberti 3&1. Maryland's two wins were both 2-up victories over Patrick Schmuecking and Felix Kvarnstrom.
Rutgers Match
In the final match of the event, Rutgers claimed three victories from its top three spots and claimed a 3.5-1.5 team victory over the Buckeyes.
Jackson Chandler claimed the Buckeyes' lone victory with a 1up win over Brendan Hansen. Chandler birdied the par-3 fourth, the sixth hole of the match, and then won the fifth hole with a par to take a 1-up lead. He held the advantage the rest of the way.
Freshman Adam Wallin and Xavier Marcoux battled back and forth for their entire match. Marcoux had a 2-up lead at the halfway point and Wallin came back to take three different 1up leads on the second nine. The two halved just two holes on the back nine but ultimately, the match was halved.
Rutgers' Chris Gotterup won his morning match 5&4 and kept his good play rolling in the afternoon as he beat Elis Svard 4&3. Patrick Schmuecking lost 3&1 and Kvarnstrom lost 5&4.
Jones Cup Invitational
Scoring conditions were tough for some of the best amateurs in the world on Saturday in round two of the Jones Cup Invitational at the Ocean Forest Golf Club in Sea Island, Ga. Maxwell Moldovan carded a round of 2-over 73 which kept him in a tie for 11th. That was because the average score of the 84-player field on Saturday was 77.44.
