Buckeyes Finish Runner-up at Robert Kepler Invitational

Freshman Giedrius Mackelis led six Buckeyes in the Top 20
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team made a run on Sunday and would finish runner-up at the 54th annual Robert Kepler Invitational, which was played over the weekend at the Columbus Country Club.
Individually, all nine Buckeyes competed in the event and six of them finish in the Top 20.
Freshman Giedrius Mackelis, who was playing as an individual this week, led the group as he enjoyed the best tournament of his first season. He carded rounds of 72-67-70 and finished in third place at 7-under par. He birdied four of his first eight holes on Sunday and grabbed the lead.
Jack Vojtko shot his second 68 of the tournament on Sunday and finished eighth at 6-under par. Vaughn Harber and Tyler Sabo both finished a shot behind him in ninth place at 5-under par. Harber carded 69-69 in his last two rounds while Sabo posted three-under par rounds of 70-70-71.
Timotej Formanek opened the tournament with back-to-back rounds of even-par 72 on Saturday but closed by making six birdies in a round of 68 on Sunday. He finished 14th at 4-under par.
Freshman Finley Bartlett eagled two par-5s on Sunday in his final round 71 and finished a shot behind Formanek at 3-under par. Topher Reed carded rounds of 73-71-71 and was 1-under par for the 54 holes.
Joe Wilson IV and Jaime Yzaga each finished in a tie for 44th at 2-over par.
As a team, the Buckeyes shot a 12-under 276 on Sunday to finish at 22-under par. They cut Minnesota’s lead down to four shots at one point but the Gophers rallied on the back nine and won the title at 30-under par.
The Buckeyes will finish the regular season next weekend at the Hoosier Collegiate at the Pfau Course in Bloomington, Ind.
