COLUMBUS, Ohio – It was simply another terrific, terrific afternoon indoors at the SPIRE Institute's Big Ten Invite for the track and field teams from Ohio State University. Eight more wins Saturday enabled the Buckeyes to secure over a third of the wins – 13 wins in 34 events – in an eight-team field that included teams from Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Nebraska, Maryland and Iowa.
A recap of the best and the brightest from the Buckeyes:
- Defending Big Ten indoor champion Adelaide Aquilla is a three-time winner for the Buckeyes so far this winter. The senior lofted the shot put 17.13m/56-2 ½ to win the competition and climb into the Top 5 nationally. The event also featured Sade Olatoye taking third (16.62m/54-6 ½) and Divine Oladipo finishing fourth with a toss of 15.81m/51-10 ½.
- Clarence Foote-Talley soared nearly three-feet beyond his prior 2021 best to win the triple jump with a leap of 16.07m/52-8 ¾. The jump was just shy of a personal best (16.09) for Foote-Talley, who jumped into the nation's Top 10 with that jump at No. 9.
- Allie Guagenti's terrific, terrific winter season continues to sparkle as she won the mile for a second consecutive week in a personal-best-crushing time of 4:40.89, the 12th fastest time in the country. Guagenti has also taken 30 seconds off her 3,000-meter best this spring and she placed fifth at the Big Ten cross country championships.
- A new personal best! The nation's fourth-fastest time. Another win. Win No. 2 on the weekend – and No. 4 this winter – for Tyler Johnson was most impressive: he ran the fourth-fastest 400 in the nation with a new personal best and winning time of 45.54. Donnie James (5th/47.78), Tyrese Fajardo (7th/48.22) and David Palmer (49.89) hit season's best in the 400 along with Johnson.
- Anavia Battle is a two-time winner at SPIRE this weekend as she took the 60-meter dash in 7.39 after running a 7.37 time in the prelims. This was Battle's sixth victory this season. Second was Yanique Dayle (7.45) and Divine Parker was sixth in 7.53.
- Emma Nwofor won a 60 hurdles race for the third time this season. Running unattached until the start of the outdoor season, Nwofor clocked a season's best, national Top 10 time of 8.16 to finish just ahead of teammate Alexus Pyles, who was second in 8.23.
- Shaun Miller Jr. secured his initial win of the season in the high jump, clearing 2.13m/6-11 ¾ to outjump four other competitors. The effort is just outside of the nation's Top 20 jumps so far.
- Not sure which came first: the mile or the 800 but Guagenti ran them both. Aziza Ayoub led Ohio State with a fifth-place and season's best time of 2:10.36 and Guagenti was 10th in 2:13.17.
- And for good measure, in the showcase event of the meet … the muscle car event finale: the Buckeyes' 4x-400-meter relay team of Donnie James, Tyler Johnson, Frank Hayes and Praise Olatoke raced to the fifth-fastest time in the nation this year with a winning effort of 3:07.45.
Additionally:
- High jumper Amaya Ugarte cleared 1.73m/5-8 to place third in the six-jumper competition; Chanler Robinson was fifth in the 400 in 55.95; Addie Engel took sixth in the 3,000 in 9:36.76; Myles Marshall went .05 faster than he has this season in the 60 hurdles and finished fourth with a time of 8.12; Harrison was third in the 60-meter dash with Praise Olatoke (fourth) and Curry (fifth) joining him in the finals; and Nick Miller, Cooper and Frank Hayes went 3-4-5 in the 800 with times of 1:49.81, 1:50.23 and 1:50.33, respectively. Miller's time is Top 20 nationally and Cooper and Hayes are just outside it.
