COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team competed on the tough Colleton River Club, Pete Dye course on the opening day of the Colleton River Collegiate, finishing 14th through nearly two rounds at 24-over par. The second round of the tournament was suspended due to darkness and the final few holes will be played prior to the third-round tomorrow morning. Senior Felix Kvarnstrom played well in day one to lead the Buckeyes, carding 72-73 to be in contention at one-over par going into the final round.
Kvarnstrom started his morning with a birdie on the second hole but followed up with a bogey to get back to even. He would hold there, making five consecutive pars before closing out the front side with a bogey to make the turn at one-over. The senior played well on the back nine, bookending back-to-back birdies with three pars on each end to get to one under with one to play. The 18th hole was one of the toughest of the day and cost Kvarnstrom a stroke, finishing out the morning at even par.
In the late round, the Sweden native ran into a little more trouble, carding three bogeys on the front nine but reigning it back in with two birdies to head to the back just one-over for the tournament. The back side showed just two blemishes to go alongside five pars and two birdies. With his two-round total of 145, Kvarnstrom sits tied for 21st with one round to play.
Freshman Jackson Chandler, competing in the second spot for the first time this season, posted an opening round 74, carding 12 pars and two birdies to finish two-over. A couple bumps during the second round caused Chandler to get off track, carding a second round 77 to sit at seven-over for the tournament, tied for 54th.
Freshman Patrick Schmucking started his day with a 77, rolling in 11 pars and two birdies. The afternoon round played steadier, as he holed nine pars and two birdies before his round was cut short.
Junior Kevin Stone posted scores of 77-76, with one hole left, and junior Laken Hinton carded 79-78, with two holes left, to round out the starting five.
Sophomore Grant Engle, the lone individual for the Buckeyes, holed 12 pars and a birdie in his first round to finish five-over. Engle turned it around in the afternoon round, carding three birdies in route to put him on track for an even-par finish with three holes to play.
The conclusion of the second round will commence at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow morning, with the third and final round following.
