Buckeyes Take on Cincinnati Bearcats at Home

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s lacrosse team will host Cincinnati at home in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center this Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 5 p.m. ET.
FOLLOW THE BUCKEYES
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
- Stony Brook came out quick in the first half, scoring three times in the opening seven minutes of the game to take a 3-0 lead. Ohio State would responded with three goals in the first period to cut the lead.
- The Buckeyes first goal was scored by freshman Caly O’Brien at the 15 minute mark. Chloe Johnson went on and score two goals late in the first period.
- Caly O’Brien scored two more goals during the second half. Chloe Johnson would go on to score again for the Buckeyes and junior Sophie Baez scored goal for OSU during the final minutes of the second half.
- Buckeyes went on to lose the game 20-7 against No. 12 Stony Brook.
SCOUTING CINCINNATI
- The Bearcats went 12-7 overal and 4-1 in the American Athletic Conference.
- Cincinnati is currently sitting at 0-2 on the season with losses to Louisville an Marquette.
- The Bearcats advanced to their first postseason appearance and went 1-1 as they downed Temple in the AAC Tournament semifinal before falling to #18 Florida in the championship game
- Three Bearcats earned preseason AAC All-Conference honors ahead of the season, including Morgan Dukes, who was a unanimous decision, along with Monica Borzillo and Kylie Nause
- Borzillo is back for her senior season after an impressive junior campaign saw her rank second nationally in points per game (5.68), seventh in points (108), 10th in assists (47) and 12th in assists per game (2.47).
- All-American and two-time World Champion Gina Thomas (Oliver) is heading into her eight season as the head coach at the University of Cincinnati in 2020 and, coming off the best season in program history that saw the Bearcats reach the postseason for the first time as well as finish as the runners-up in the inaugural American Athletic Conference season, will look to once again take the Bearcats to new heights.
- Oliver is a 2005 graduate of Ohio State, she spent the 2006 and 2007 seasons on the Buckeyes staff, working under OSU head coach Sue Stimmel. While in Columbus, Oliver served as co-director of the Ohio State Women’s Lacrosse Camp, while also assisting with recruiting, budgeting and scholarship duties, as well as travel and team practice planning.
BUCKEYE NATION
- The Buckeyes are set to host four more home games this season in Columbus.
- Fourteen states and one province of Canada make up the hometowns of the 2020 Buckeyes.
- Eight players hail from New York, the most represented state on the team.
- Seven players are native to Ohio – Liza Hernandez (New Albany, Ohio), Caroline Tatsuoka (Hunting Valley, Ohio), Catie Beg (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), Jaclen Moxley (Granville, Ohio), Emma Blessing (Cincinnati, Ohio), Emily Rezabek (New Albany, Ohio) and Ava Keethler (Upper Arlington, Ohio).
- Head coach Amy Bokker is in her first year with the Buckeyes, coming from Stanford University. Bokker is the winningest coach in Stanford history and owns a record of 248-161 in over 23 seasons as a head coach. Bokker brought associate head coach Kristen “Cookie” Carr and assistant coach Kara Mupo from Stanford as well. The newly appointed coaching staff has produced a 3-0 start to the Buckeyes season and look to build on their success.
CAPTAINS
- Seniors Jill Rizzo, Liza Hernandez, Regina Doty and Emily Skrzypczak, along with junior Lindsay Epstein are the Buckeyes team captains.
- Jill Rizzo is a three-time returning captain while Skrzypczak, Doty, Hernandez and Epstein have earned the title for the first time in their careers.
- Bokker on captains: “Regina, Emily, Lindsay, Liza and Jill have shown unwavering commitment to our core values and are true positive influences for Buckeye women’s lacrosse. They each embody the traits of excellent role models and we believe, collectively, will help lead our team to greatness.”
NEW DIGS IN ATHLETICS
- Ohio State women’s lacrosse recently moved into the brand new Schumaker Complex on OSU’s developing athletic campus. This new facility is the training “hub” for 33 Olympic sports teams, located in the heart of the Athletic District and connected to the iconic Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
- The Schumaker provides a state-of-the-art facility for the nutritional, physical and psychological development of the student-athletes on 33 teams at Ohio State. Over 800 student-athletes lift, condition, train and rehabilitate injuries in the complex, while also benefiting from nutritional and mental preparation for peak performance.
- Coming Spring 2021, the Buckeyes will share a brand-new lacrosse specific stadium with the men’s lacrosse.
