COLUMBUS, Ohio- Head coach of the Ohio State men’s gymnastics program, Rustam Sharipov, along with the rest of the Ohio State coaching staff has been able to make Steelwood Athletic Training Facility into one where national competitors train. Sharipov has brought in Trevor Howard, a Penn State Alum, to prepare for the World Championships. Howard recently competed in the US National Championships in August and earned a qualifying spot to compete at the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany from October 4th to the 14th.
“You see that they’ve made numerous national team members, it’s definitely a great place to train,” said Howard, “The atmosphere is unbelievable, Rustam and Caz both bring in good, different energy that you need to be successful and push you to be the best you can be.”
After competing in the world championships, Howard hopes to earn a spot to be able to compete in the Olympics.
“By watching what Trevor accomplished at Penn State and his willingness to continue with his career in gymnastics at a higher level, bringing him to train with our alums doing the same, Sean Melton and Alec Yoder, I felt as if it was a great addition to our team,” said Sharipov, “Our student-athletes are able to see the future. If you have the desire to become a national team member and eventually be at the world and Olympic level, you can do it, and that is what our guys are being able to see through Trevor now.”
Sharipov has been the head coach of the Buckeyes since 2011 and certainly knows what it takes to compete at the highest level. Sharipov has won three Olympic medals, including two gold. And with that comes an extremely high standard when coaching Ohio State’s past, current, and future gymnasts.
