COLUMBUS, Ohio — Mackenzie Allessie was named the Big Ten Freshman Player of the Week, the Big Ten announced today. Allessie has already proved herself an offensive force for the Scarlet and Gray and had made an immediate impact through 10 games. The Mount Joy, Pa., native is on track to break many Ohio State records.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- 11 goals, five assists, and 27 points on the season.
- Recorded a pair of goals in games against Indiana and Central Michigan.
- Collected three goals and one assist in Sunday’s game at Ohio University, making her the first Ohio State freshman to have a three-goal game since Maddy Humphrey vs. Appalachian State (2014).
- Records a .725 shots-on-goal percentage.
Allessie’s total of 11 goals on the season already matches that of Ohio State’s 2018 leading goal scorer, Esther Clotet Alsina, with seven regular season games remaining. In the past five years, the highest number of goals scored in a season has been 12, by Maddy Humphrey (2016, 2014) and Peanut Johnson (2015).
Allessie ranks second in the Big Ten and 15th nationally in goals per game (.89). Above her is Northwestern’s Bente Baekers, who has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the week four times so far this year. In points per game, Allessie ranks second in the Big Ten and ninth nationally (2.22).
This is Ohio State’s second appearance on the Big Ten weekly honors list in 2019. The first accolade was awarded to Aaliyah Hernandez as Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 9). Hernandez was also the last Buckeye student-athlete to be named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week (Oct. 15, 2018).
Head Coach Jarred Martin on Mackenzie’s impact so far: “Mack has been a steady force for us all year. She works so hard on both sides of the ball and can change the game with her intensity. She is insatiably hungry and that is a joy to coach. I know there are more good things in store for her this season and in her career.”
Allessie and the rest of the 15th-ranked Buckeyes host No. 9 Michigan on Friday at 4 p.m. and Stanford on Sunday at 3 p.m. Both games are at Buckeye Varsity Field and admission is free.
