Buckeyes Set to Host CSU, Travel to Syracuse

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s soccer team plays Cleveland State at 7 p.m. Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes come into the match with a 1-7-2 overall record and 0-3-1 mark in league play, while the Vikings are 2-5-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the Horizon League. The match is the Connor Senn Memorial Game for the Buckeyes. Ohio State will then travel to play Syracuse at 5 p.m. Monday in Syracuse, N.Y.

17TH-ANNUAL CONNOR SENN MEMORIAL GAME
Cash donations will be accepted Friday night for the event that raises awareness for sudden cardiac arrest in athletes with proceeds benefiting the Connor Senn Memorial Fund and the Dorothy M. Davis Heart & Lung Research Institute at the Wexner Medical Center. On Sept. 26, 2001, Connor Senn, a freshman on the men’s soccer team, collapsed on the field during the Buckeyes’ game at Akron and died that evening from a congenital heart defect, a condition virtually undetectable a decade ago. The Connor Senn Memorial Fund was quickly established by Dr. Lance Senn, Connor’s father and a former member of the Ohio State tennis team, with it expanding over the last decade to subsidize a fully-endowed scholarship at Ohio State and now to begin an educational symposium on sudden cardiac arrest.

KICKING OFF
• The Buckeyes return to non-conference play after going 0-3-1 in four staight BIg Ten matches.
• Last time out, the Buckeyes fell, 3-2, in overtime at home against Rutgers Sept. 30. Ohio State scored two first-half goals, but the Scarlet Knights came back to tie it at 2-all in the second half before a golden goal in the 94th minute of the game.
• The Buckeyes have had nine members make their OSU debuts this season.
• Head coach Brian Maisonneuve claimed his first career win in a 1-0 victory over Hofstra Aug. 26 in Columbus.
• Maisonneuve was associate head coach at Indiana University, guiding the team to the 2012 NCAA national title. He was a member of the Columbus Crew from 1996-2004.
• Ohio State returns six starters from the 2017 squad and welcomes seven newcomers. The Buckeyes lost seven letterwinners and five starters from the team that finished 8-10-1 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
• The Buckeyes were picked tied for sixth with Penn State in the Big Ten preseason poll. Indiana was picked as the preseason favorite followed by Michigan State, Maryland, Michigan and Wisconsin.
• Senior Brady Blackwell, redshirt junior Parker Siegfried and sophomore Will Hirschman were named to the Big Ten preseason honors list.
• The Buckeyes are averaging 10.3 shots per game and 0.60 goals per game this season.
• Michael Prosuk leads the Buckeyes with 22 shots, while Scheper has 18 shots. Devyn Etling leads the Buckeyes with two goals and Scheper has collected a team-high five points on one goal and three assists.
• Ohio State has created 1 corner chances and has made 33 saves as a team.
• Brady Blackwell and Joshua Jackson-Ketchup were each named to the All-Tournament Team in Dayton.
A NEW ERA OF OSU MEN’S SOCCER
Head coach Brian Maisonneuve is in his first year as head coach of the Buckeyes. Maisonneuve comes from Indiana University where he was associate head coach for the Hoosiers. As one of the top assistants in the country, Maisonneuve guided Indiana to the 2012 NCAA national title, a NCAA runner-up finish in 2017, the 2010 Big Ten regular season title as well as the 2013 Big Ten tournament championship. Maisonneuve, a native of Warren, Mich., was one of the top players in Indiana soccer history, winning the Hermann Trophy in 1994. He spent nine seasons with the Columbus Crew from 1996-2004 and was a member of the United States’ 1998 World Cup team. Maisonneuve is assisted by associate head coach Sergio Gonzalez, assistant coach Matt Foldesy and director of operations Chad Barson.
LAST TIME OUT
Devyn Etling returned to the lineup and scored his second goal of the year and Jack Holland found his first collegiate goal. However, the Scarlet Knights fought back to win 3-2 in overtime last Sunday in Columbus. Rutgers scored twice in less than a minute span in the 62nd minute and found the golden goal in overtime when Jordan Hall headed in his second score of the afternoon in the 94th minute to claim the road win.
SCOUTING CLEVELAND STATE
Cleveland State is 2-5-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the Horizon League this fall. The team is coming off a 3-1 win over preseason favorite UIC as the Vikings ended the Flames’ 12-match unbeaten run against a league opponent. Vlad Jandric was named the Nike Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week. He leads the team with three goals this year.
THE SERIES
This will be the 26th meeting between Ohio State and Cleveland State and first since the 2015 campaign. The Vikings lead the series, 14-11-1. Ohio State was won the last nine matches, including a 5-0 mark at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
A LOOK AT SYRACUSE
The Orange are 4-4-1 overall and 0-3 in ACC play. Syracuse claimed a 3-1 win at Akron Oct. 1 and are set to play No. 1 Wake Forest on Friday night. Tajon Buchanan Buchanan leads the team with 10 points (3g, 4a) and goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert is 4-4-1 with a 1.48 GAA and .689 save percentage.
THE SERIES
The Buckeyes are 1-1-1 all-time vs. the Orange. Last year, Ohio State fell, 2-1, against Syracuse in Columbus. This will be the first time Ohio State has traveled to Syracuse, N.Y., in program history.
HOME COOKING
Ohio State holds a 113-50-29 record (.664) in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium since the facility opened in 1999, including 20 victories in the last three seasons.
WOLSTEIN RECAP
Ohio State went 1-1-0 at the 13th annual Wolstein Classic last weekend in Columbus. The team fell, 2-0, in its opener vs. Furman Friday night before rebounding a 1-0 shutout victory over Hofstra last Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Jake Scheper scored the lone goal on the weekend on a penalty kick vs. the Pride in the 65th minute. The Buckeyes outshot Hofstra, 18-8, and had a 5-3 in corners. Junior CC Uche (two starts in defense) and freshman Xavier Green were each named to the Wolstein Classic All-Tournament team.
THE NEWCOMERS
Head coach Brian Maisonneuve and his staff welcomed a total of seven new faces to its 2018 roster. The incoming class is made up of two transfers and five freshmen – Osman Fofanah, CC Uche, Xavier Green, Cory DuBois, Colin Lynch, Chaise Thiel and Daniel Wee. After missing last year due to injury, redshirt junior transfer Jake Scheper and redshirt freshman Devyn Etling are ready to make an impact this fall.

The Buckeyes’ schedule includes 10 matches at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium this season with home Big Ten action kicking off Sept. 21 against Northwestern. Admission is free to all Ohio State men’s soccer regular-season home games.
HOME BROADCAST SCHEDULE
The Ohio State men’s soccer team will make two appearances on national television this fall. The Buckeyes will be seen on ESPNU Sept. 25 at Michigan and BTN Sept. 30 at home against Rutgers. All other home matches will be on BTN Plus ($).
UP NEXT
Ohio State hosts Michigan State at 5 p.m. Oct. 12 in Columbus. The match will be senior day for the Buckeyes.
