COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State women’s tennis team defeated No. 10 Baylor, 4-0, in the Varsity Tennis Center Sunday. The Buckeyes improve to 11-1 this season, while Baylor falls to 7-2.
The Buckeyes gained the 1-0 advantage going into singles with a pair of doubles wins on courts one and three, including a victory over a Top 20 ranked duo. Junior Anna Sanford notched the first singles victory for Ohio State dropping only three games. Seniors Sandy Niehaus and Miho Kowase both won in straight sets for the second time this weekend to help Ohio State secure the team win.
Up next, Ohio State will travel to Tempe, Ariz. to take on No. 12 Pepperdine at 2 p.m. Saturday and No. 30 Arizona State at 2 p.m. March 5.
“Baylor has had a really strong season so far,” Melissa Schaub, Ohio State head coach, said. “Obviously their ranking is high so we knew it was going to be tough coming in here today. We were able to get the doubles point which was good and we got to see some different doubles teams. Now, we’ll get ready for a tough road trip next weekend against Pepperdine and Arizona State so the focus will switch to there.”
In doubles, the senior duo of Ferny Angeles Paz and Gabriella De Santis was the first off the court after posting a 6-1 win over the Baylor pair of Rhiann Newborn and Theresa Van Zyl on court three. The No. 26-ranked tandem of sophomore Francesca Di Lorenzo and Kowase topped the No. 18-ranked duo of Blair Shankle and Elizabeth Profit 6-2 on court one to clinch the doubles point for the Buckeyes.
