No. 2 Ohio State Posts 6-1 Victory over No. 9 Pepperdine

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State women’s tennis team prevailed over No. 9 Pepperdine, 6-1, in a neutral site match Saturday in Tempe, Ariz. Ohio State improves to 12-1 on the year and has wins over six Top 10 teams this spring. The Buckeyes will close the weekend with a match vs. Arizona State at 2 p.m. ET Sunday.
In the win over Pepperdine, the Buckeyes claimed the doubles point, including a victory over the Waves’ No. 2-ranked doubles team by Francesca Di Lorenzo and Miho Kowase. In singles, the Buckeyes picked up four straight set wins and a three-set victory for the 6-1 final.
“It was a great team effort today beating a good Pepperdine team,” Adam Cohen, Ohio State assistant coach, said. “It’s not easy coming out here and getting ready to play a really good team. To get that win today is a credit to the team and all of the hard work they have put in on and off the court. We are really proud of this group and looking forward to a tough match against Arizona State tomorrow.”
The teams split the first two doubles matches off the court. Pepperdine’s tandem of Luisa Stefani and Ashley Lahey posted a 6-1 win over Buckeyes Sandy Niehaus and Anna Sanford on court two. On court one, the Buckeye duo of Di Lorenzo and Kowase, ranked 26th, defeated the Waves’ second-ranked team of Christine Maddox and Mayar Sherif, 6-3. On court three, the senior duo of Ferny Angeles Paz and Gabriella De Santis won 6-2 over Dzina Milovanovic and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai to claim the doubles point.
In singles, the Waves’ No. 25-ranked Ashley Lahey won 6-4, 6-4 over No. 53 Sanford on court two to tie the match at one. Shortly after, Di Lorenzo, ranked first, topped sixth-ranked Stefani, 6-0, 6-4, for a 2-1 Buckeye lead. Di Lorenzo is 19-1 overall this year.
The Buckeyes won the final four singles matches, with three straight set victories. No. 120 Angeles Paz downed Runglerdkriangkrai, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6, marking her 11th straight win overall and her 10th this spring, followed by a 7-5, 6-3 win by No. 57 De Santis over No. 17-ranked Sherif on court three, clinching the Buckeye victory.
No. 42 Kowase topped Milovanovic, 7-6 (4), 6-2, on courth five. It was her 11th win in a row, as she stays undefeated this spring. On court four, Niehaus, ranked 84th, prevailed in three sets over No. 51 Laura Gulbe, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
