COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team defeated Miami, 4-0, Saturday in the Varsity Tennis Center. The Buckeyes improve to 10-1 on the year, including 6-0 at home, while the Hurricanes fall to 2-4. Sophomore Francesca Di Lorenzo and senior Sandy Niehaus were victorious in both singles and doubles.
The Buckeyes gained the 1-0 advantage going into singles after clinching the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Di Lorenzo posted the first singles victory on court one after dropping only one games against a Top 10 opponent. Sandy Niehaus and senior Miho Kowase both also posted straight set victories to secure the win for the Scarlet and Gray.
The Buckeyes will continue their home stand tomorrow vs. No. 10 Baylor at 11 a.m.
“It was a pretty good match today,” Melissa Schaub, Ohio State head coach, said. “We definitely started well in doubles which is big. We got the doubles point last year against Miami and won four first sets but then those guys came back and got the win against us. It feels good to keep things going today and get ready for a tough Baylor team tomorrow.”
In doubles, the No. 47-ranked Ohio State senior tandem of Sandy Niehaus and Gabriella De Santis were the first off the court after posting a 6-0 win over Maci Epstein and Silvia Fuentes on court two. On court one, the Buckeye pair of Di Lorenzo and junior Anna Sanford downed Sinead Lohan and Clara Tanielian 6-1 to clinch the doubles point for the team. The senior pair of Miho Kowase and Ferny Angeles Paz were up 3-1 on Ana Madcur and Estela Perez-Somarriba on court three when play was abandoned.
