Columbus, Ohio— Ohio State saw another school record fall in a relay event during the first full day of the 2017 Big Ten Championships.
Matt McHugh, Jack Barone, Noah Lense, and Josh Fleagle all helped set one of the school records on Thursday, and on Friday they did so by over two full seconds. Their time of 3:04.13 put them in second place in the event and was faster than the previous Big Ten record that had stood since 2007. Indiana’s first place time of 3:03.28 is the new mark. Fleagle’s 100 freestyle split (41.44) would be the third-fastest 100 free mark in the country, bettered only by Blake Pieroni in the lane beside him and Florida’s Caeleb Dressel, a pair of Olympic gold medalists.
On the diving boards, Colin Zeng finished third with a score of 474.60 on one-meter, which is the third-best score in Big Ten Championships history, just behind the first and second place finishers tonight. Zeng, the 2016 B1G champion on one-meter, finished ridiculously strong, posting his three best dives in the final three rounds and putting up scores of 92.4 and 91.8 in his final two. Ohio State’s strong diving contingent made its mark on Thursday with Clay White, Stephen Romanik, and Christo Law all finishing 11-13 and earning some big points for the Buckeyes. Aaron Daniels-Freeman also earned points for Ohio State, giving the team a total of five point scorers on the day.
Three individual swimming events were contested on Thursday and four Buckeyes competed in A finals heats of those events. The 500 freestyle led off with Brayden Seal and Joey Long repeating as A finals contestants- both of them were Top 8 finishers at Big Tens last season. Seal (4:16.13) and Long (4:18.57) both put up fantastic times that both qualify as NCAA provisional marks. Freshman Ryan Vander Meulen finished near the top of the B finals with his time of 4:21.24.
The 50 freestyle saw four Buckeyes swim in finals heats. Mossimo Chavez (19.45) and Matt McHugh (19.50) touched the wall in sixth and seventh, respectively, to lead Ohio State in that race. Josh Fleagle’s time of 19.61 was good for ninth place and Thomas Trace finished 14th (19.88) while racing with Fleagle in the B finals.
In between the two freestyle events was the 200 IM, in which three Ohio State swimmers earned spots in the B finals. Andrew Loy (1:44.71), Ching Lim (1:45.57), and Andrew Appleby (1:46.13) all turned in good performances on Thursday to register 45 total points for the Scarlet and Gray.
One thing’s for sure: there was some fast swimming and fantastic diving happening today. Every event on the first full day of competition saw either a pool record, meet record, or conference record fall.
Friday will be another full day of swimming and diving at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Fans will be able to see the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, and 100 backstroke as well as the 200 freestyle relay and three-meter diving. Prelims will begin at 11:00 a.m. ET and finals at 6:30 p.m. ET.
