COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 4 Ohio State women’s tennis team topped Penn State, 7-0, to open Big Ten play at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus Sunday. The Buckeyes improve to 9-1, while the Nittany Lions fall to 3-4.
The Buckeyes claimed the doubles point with wins on courts one and two to gain the 1-0 advantage going into singles. Francesca Di Lorenzo, Gabriella De Santis, Anna Sanford, Miho Kowase, Sandy Niehaus and Ferny Angeles Paz all posted straight set singles victories in the sweep against the Nittany Lions.
“We started out with a good doubles point and that is always good for the momentum,” Melissa Schaub, Ohio State head coach, said. “Penn State is a tough team but we are playing well right now. We just need to keep trying to get better. We have a big weekend ahead with Baylor and Miami coming in here. We will take a day off and try to get ready for that.”
In doubles, the Buckeye tandem of junior Anna Sanford and senior Sandy Niehaus were the first off the court after downing the Penn State duo of Devan McCluskey and Katia Blik on court one, 6-0. The Ohio State pair of sophomore Francesca Di Lorenzo and senior Miho Kowase posted a 6-1 victory on court two over the Nittany Lions’ tandem of Bennett Dunn and Jacqueline Zuhse to clinch the doubles point for the Buckeyes. On court three, the senior duo of Ferny Angeles Paz and Gabriella De Santis was up 5-1 over the Penn State pair of Shannon Hanley and Samantha Smith when play was abandoned.
No. 55 Sanford posted the first victory for the Scarlet and Gray with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Zuhse on court three. On court four, No. 84 Kowase notched a 6-1, 6-1 win over Smith, marking her eighth win in a row and improving her dual record to 8-0. Angeles Paz topped Dunn 6-2, 6-0 on court six to secure the team victory over Penn State. It was the 10th win in a row for Angeles Paz, who is 9-0 in dual match play to lead the Buckeyes.
Dropping only one game, Niehaus beat Hanley on court five shortly afterwards, 6-1, 6-0. No. 68 De Santis defeated McCluskey on court two, 6-2, 6-2. No. 1 Di Lorenzo clinched the shutout for the Buckeyes on court one after defeating Blik, 6-3, 6-2.
