COLUMBUS, Ohio – Cammi Prantl’s record-breaking senior season was punctuated on Wednesday afternoon when she was named a third team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Prantl becomes the 11th All-American in program history and first since 2010.
“This is a tremendous honor for Cammi and the program,” said head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly. “She will go down as one of the greats to have played at Ohio State. Not only did Cammi have a standout season, she also had a fantastic four years; she was a consistent, relentless competitor. I am thrilled for her and her family, as they were as invested as any family could be in the success of our entire program.”
Prantl, who played both catcher and left field this past season, became the Buckeyes’ all-time hits and double leader this season while helping Ohio State advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in six years. She hit .405 with 28 extra base hits – 19 doubles, eight home runs, one triple – and added 42 RBI and 42 runs scored in 50 regular season games. Over the final week of the regular season, Prantl swung one of the hottest bats in the country, going 11-for-18 (.611) with five doubles, a 1.056 slugging percentage and .632 on-base percentage. While stats from conference tournament and regional games are not included in All-American voting, Prantl finished her 2016 campaign with 20 doubles, nine home runs, 44 RBI and 45 runs scored. She was one of eight Big Ten players to earn All-America honors.
Prantl broke two long-standing records in 2016 – the career doubles mark, which was previously set in 1994 by Krinon Clark (58), and the career hits record, established in 2002 by Anna Smith (243). Prantl surpassed Clark on May 4 vs. Kent State and graduates with 64 doubles and then four days later topped Smith’s record and finishes with 247 hits.
From nearby Ashville, Ohio and a Teays Valley High School graduate, Prantl started all 218 games in her career and never batted lower than .329 in a season. She ranks in the top 10 all-time in seven different offensive categories, including hits, doubles, batting average (sixth, .350), RBI (fifth, 144), runs scored (fourth, 164), at-bats (second, 705) and home runs (seventh, 23).
In 23 Big Ten games this year, Prantl hit a blistering .439 with 19 RBI, a .494 on-base percentage and conference-best 11 doubles. Prior to the start of conference play, the nation took notice of her exploits when she was named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week on March 1 for hitting .786 in five games at the Spartan Classic vs. Virginia Tech (twice), Morehead State and USC Upstate. From February 26 through March 20, she had a career-high 14 game hitting streak.
The 2016 Buckeyes went 34-20-1, finished in the top half of the Big Ten standings for the third straight year and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
