Bogey-Free Day Places Pogacar in Contention at Big Ten Champpionships – Ohio State Buckeyes

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Katja Pogacar posted a bogey-free opening round at the 2016 Big Ten Championships while dropping in three birdies to complete the day at 3-under (69) and tied for third place overall in the 83-player event. She will enter Round Two within striking distance of 18-hole leader Brooke Ferrell (-7) of Wisconsin.
For the first time since 2013, Ohio State does not own or share the lead after a round at the Big Ten Championships; a run of six consecutive rounds which saw the Buckeyes on top and ultimately claim back-to-back conference crowns in 2014 -15. Ohio State ranks ninth thus far in 2016, but is among a congested team standings which separates teams slotted first through 11th by only nine strokes.
Pogacar is among a seven-way tie for third, utilizing 15 pars to remain in contention. The Buckeyes paced all teams with a total of 78 pars. Freshman duo, Jaclyn Lee and Niki Schroeder, each contributed 14 pars to the effort.
Pogacar ranked highly in both Par-3 scoring and Par-5 scoring. She shot 1-under on the short holes and 2-under on holes of length, the second-lowest tally for both.
Jessica Porvasnik, the 2014 Big Ten medalist, began her third career conference tournament registering a 1-under 71. She matched Pogacar’s three birdies to overpower a pair of bogies and pull into a tie for 17th place.
Rio Watanabe and Lee chipped in to the team tally as well in the ‘play 6, count 4’ format. The tandem finished T-45th (75; +3) and T-55th (76; +4), respectively. Schroeder was right behind, taking 77 strokes (+5) for a piece of 61st place.

Ohio State is in the latest threesome for Round Two on Saturday with tee times off of the ‘Back 9’ starting at 10:18 a.m. ET. The Buckeyes will play alongside Penn State and Wisconsin.
