No. 2 Buckeyes Sweep Doubleheader vs. Dayton and Cincinnati – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The second-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team (15-1, 1-0 B1G) swept both Dayton and Cincinnati Wednesday in matches inside the Varsity Tennis Center. The Buckeyes improved to 15-1, while Dayton fell to 9-5 and Cincinnati dropped to 7-4. Ohio State is 8-0 at home this season.
In the first match of the day vs. Dayton, Ohio State captured wins on courts one and two to clinch the doubles point. The Buckeyes’ No. 38-ranked tandem of juniors Sandy Niehaus and Ferny Angeles Paz downed Mattea Kilstofte and Marlys Bridgham, 6-0. On court two, freshman Francesca Di Lorenzo and sophomore Olivia Sneed topped the pair of Jade Kawamoto and Mandy Marchant, 6-2. Play was stopped on court three with the Buckeye duo of junior Miho Kowase and freshman Andrea Ballinger winning over Jackie Kawamoto and Kristina Benjamin, 4-2.
In singles, No. 3-ranked Di Lorenzo defeated Bridgham without dropping a game on court one, 6-0, 6-0. Redshirt senior Nicole Flower downed Benjamin on court six, 6-0, 6-1, followed by senior Grainne O’Neill posting a 6-1, 6-1 win over Marchant on court five to secure the victory for the Scarlet and Gray.
Angeles Paz notched a 6-2, 6-1 victory on court three over Jackie Kawamoto shortly afterward. No. 91-ranked Niehaus claimed court four with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jade Kawamoto. Kowase triumphed over Kilstofte on court two 6-2, 6-3 to complete the sweep for the Buckeyes.
After a short intermission, the Buckeyes were back in action vs. Cincinnati. In doubles, the Scarlet and Gray pair of Sneed and Di Lorenzo quickly downed the Bearcat duo of Harley Hutchison and Samantha Perry on court two, 6-1. Di Lorenzo and Sneed stayed unbeaten this spring with a 14-0 ledger.
On court one, the No. 38 ranked team of Niehaus and Paz fell to Lauren Bellinger and Ali Miller, 6-3, leaving court three to decide the doubles point.
The Buckeye tandem of O’Neill and Flower prevailed in a tiebreaker vs. Katya Bure and Antonella Bramato, 7-6 (5), to clinch the doubles point. In the tiebreaker, the Ohio State duo was down 4-1 and 5-3 but won the last four points to capture the match and send the Buckeyes into singles with a 1-0 lead.
In singles, Sneed posted the first Buckeye victory against Bure on court four, 6-0, 6-3. Angeles Paz quickly followed on court three defeating Antonella Bramato, 6-0, 6-2. Sneed and Di Lorenzo lead the Buckeyes with matching 13-1 records in dual matches this season.
Di Lorenzo, who led the Buckeyes with four total victories on the day, secured the Buckeye win by topping Miller on court one, 6-2, 6-2. Di Lorenzo, ranked third nationally, is 12-2 in dual matches.
O’Neill posted a victory over Hannah Wille on court six, 6-2, 6-4, and Niehaus defeated Harley Hutchinson on court five, 6-2, 6-2. After losing a close first set, Kowase battled back to secure the second Buckeye sweep of the day on court two, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5). She is 11-1 in singles this spring.
Ohio State will have this weekend off before traveling to face No. 9 Miami Wednesday. After a Big Ten match at Wisconsin March 18, the Buckeyes will host B1G foe Minnesota March 20. The match vs. the Gophers is scheduled to be played outdoors at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
