SANTEE, Calif. — Cammi Prantl and Ashley Goodwin combined to drive in six runs as Ohio State broke open a close game in the late innings and earned a 8-3 victory on Friday night over San Jose State in Santee, Calif. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 13-7 on the year.
THE SHORT STORY
A four-run fifth inning by Ohio State broke a 3-3 tie and was all the offense the Buckeyes would need to pull away from the Spartans. Prantl (two-for-three, three RBI, two runs scored) and Goodwin (one-for-three, three RBI) were joined in the offensive hit parade by Erika Leonard, who was two-for-three with a run scored. In the circle, Shelby Hursh started the contest and was relieved by Morgan Ray, who picked up her first collegiate win by going three innings and allowing just two hits while striking out three.
HOW THE BUCKEYE RUNS WERE SCORED
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Prantl started out the inning by getting on base via a hit by pitch. Leonard then sent a single to right field, moving Prantl to third base. Goodwin followed with an RBI ground out and Clark made the score 2-1 on a double to left center. The third run was scored on a RBI single by pinch hitter Jayla Saibene.
That lead was short-lived, however. San Jose State came back with two runs of its own in the top of the fifth, knotting the score at 3-3. Ohio State plated four runs in the bottom of the frame on three hits to go ahead for good. Prantl had the biggest hit, lacing a two-run double to right center, scoring Alex Bayne and Maddy McIntyre. Goodwin’s two-RBI triple also was a key hit, making the score 7-3. The Buckeyes tacked on their eighth run when Prantl singled home Bayne.
IN THE CIRCLE
Hursh pitched the first four innings of the contest, earning her team-leading eighth start of the year. She struck out five before giving way to Ray, who struck out three on her way to earning her first collegiate win. The Buckeyes’ pitching staff continues to lead the Big Ten with a 2.33 team ERA.
SPRING BREAK TRIP
Four starters are hitting over .400 on Ohio State’s Spring Break trip, which began last weekend at Arizona State. The group is led by Goodwin, who checks in with a .538 average, six RBI and .846 slugging percentage. Prantl has a team-high eight RBI, .423 average and eight runs scored. Leonard (.417, two home runs) and Clark (.412, four doubles, four RBI). Hursh leads the pitching staff with a 1.91 ERA, two wins and 18.1 innings pitched.
