COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite a lead at halftime, the Ohio State men’s soccer team fell, 2-1, at No. 4 Louisville Tuesday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium in Louisville, Ky. With the loss, the Buckeyes drop to 4-10-1 overall, while the Cardinals move to 10-3-2 this season.
CROWDED BOX TO START
Both defenses were tested early on a warm week night in Louisville as each team earned five corners in the opening 20 minutes of regulation. Redshirt freshman Parker Siegfried was solid and made four saves in the opening half of play. Hunter Robertson had the Buckeyes’ first shot of the contest, but went wide of the near post in the 13th minute.
BUCKYES WITH LEAD AT HALF
After a tough stretch of offense on the road this year, Ohio State found a go-ahead goal in the first half at fourth-ranked Louisville. Christian Soldat scored his first goal of the season when he finished off a pass from Abdi Mohamed from three yards out. Austin Bergstrom crossed in a pass at the left wing to Mohamed, who found Soldat with space in front of the net at 31:06. The Buckeye defense kept it a 1-0 lead headed into halftime.
LOUISVILLE ANSWERS
The Cardinals answered in the 51st minute when Mohamed Thiaw scored his 10th goal of the year. Thiaw finished inside the far left post from six yards out after the cross from Daniel Johnson.
CARDS TAKE THE LEAD
Louisville jumped to a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute after Cherif Dieye struck a shot from 20 yards out through traffic inside the near post for his fourth of the year.
SIEGFRIED SEASON HIGH
Despite the loss, Siegfried and the Buckeye defense made some big plays throughout the entire 90 minutes. Siegfried had a season-high nine saves but falls to 4-10-1. The native of Granville, Ohio, made five stops in the second half vs. the fourth-ranked Cardinals and now has 54 stops in 2016.
