COLUMBUS, Ohio – Morgan Kile made the return to her home state one that she will always remember.

The sophomore from Mountain Top, Pa. and graduate of Crestwood High School scored nine minutes into the double overtime period as Ohio State moved to 2-0 in the Big Ten with a 2-1 win over Penn State on Sunday afternoon in State College. It’s the Buckeyes’ first win over the Nittany Lions since October of 2011.

The goal by Kile was her first of the year (she also had three assists) and came on a breakaway at the 94:48 mark. Ohio State’s other goal came from junior Brooke Hiltz approximately nine minutes into the second half, tying the score at 1-1.

Penn State controlled much of the play in the first half, outshooting Ohio State 14-3 and scoring its only goal on a penalty stroke by Brooke Birosik just over 23 minutes into the period. Despite piling up 14 shots and nine penalty corners, the Nittany Lions couldn’t extend their lead, thanks to goalie Liz Tamburro and a Buckeye defense that snuffed out multiple scoring opportunities. Tamburro finished with 11 saves – a season high – and was aided by defensive saves from Hannah Pany (two), Caroline Rath and Carolina Vergroesen.

In the second half, Hiltz tied the score at 1-1 in the 47th minute, assisted by Pennsylvania native Casey Cole, also a Crestwood High School graduate. The Buckeye offense generated five shots in the period, but couldn’t put in the game winner.

Penn State had the only two shots of the first overtime period, but in the second, Ohio State turned up the offense pressure and had four chances, highlighted by Kile’s game-winner. It in the second game-winning goal of her career, the first coming last season in a overtime upset of third-ranked Virginia.

The Nittany Lions outshot Ohio State 25-12 and had a 14-1 edge in penalty corners. Tamburro’s counterpart in goal, Jenny Rizzo, made eight saves.

Ohio State is off to its best start in the Big Ten since the 2010 season and has won five of its last six games. The Buckeyes are back in action when it opens a four-game homestand against Maryland on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
