COLUMBUS, Ohio – Peanut Johnson and Maddy Humphrey, one of the top scoring duos in the Big Ten, were at it again for Ohio State on Friday. The two had a hand in all three of the Buckeyes’ goals as Ohio State defeated Ball State, 3-2. With the victory, the Buckeyes improve to 3-2 overall and are on a two-game winning streak.
Humphrey, who entered the game as tops in the Big Ten in points per game (2.25/game) scored one and handed out an assist, while Johnson had a five-point day with two goals and an assist. The duo teamed up for Ohio State’s first score of the game, as Johnson sent a cross to Humphrey who was waiting five yards away from the goal and sent the ball past Ball State goalie Jordan Dues. Humphrey now has at least one goal in all five games this year and points in 17 of 23 career games.
The assist of Humphrey’s goal gave Johnson 70 career points, and she quickly added points No. 71 and 72 when she scored unassisted just two minutes later. The goal, a backhanded shot from the right corner of the circle, was unassisted.
The Cardinals refused to go quietly, however, cutting the lead in half in the ninth minute as Lexi Kavanaugh tipped in a Merinda Morley shot following a penalty corner. Kavanaugh scored two goals on the day for Ball State.
Ohio State’s lead would remain 2-1 through halftime, but an important insurance goal was scored by Ohio State is the 40th minute as Johnson put the capper on her two-goal performance by receiving a pass from Humphrey approximately seven yards in front of the cage and placing a shot in the upper right hand corner of the cage.
Ball State once again made it a one-goal game in the 55th minute as Kavanaugh scored for the second time on the afternoon, but that’s as close as the Cardinals would get. Liz Tamburro, the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, made two of her three saves in the second half. Ohio State controlled much of the play in its offensive end, holding a 16-7 edge in shots and 7-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Friday’s contest marked the fourth time in five games that the Buckeyes have outshot their opponent. The offense, average nearly 20 shots per game coming in to the contest, ranks amongst the best in the Big Ten in both shots (89, 17.8/game) and goals per game (3.2). Humphrey (12 points, five goals, two assists) and Johnson (10 points, four goals, two assists) are the first players to reach double digits in points this season.
Ohio State’s defense, led by Tamburro, Emma Royce, Carolina Vergroesen, Hannah Pany and Caroline Rath, limited an opponent to less than 10 shots for the third time this season.
The Buckeyes return to action next Friday, Sept. 18, when it travels to East Lansing, Mich. to face Michigan State in the Big Ten opener.
