Buckeyes Down Hofstra in The Shoe, 9-8 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio –The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team stayed undefeated at home (4-0), downing Hofstra, 9-8, Saturday in Ohio Stadium. The teams were tied after the first, second and third quarters but the Buckeyes (5-2, 0-0 B1G) outscored Hofstra (1-4, 0-0 CAA) 2-1 in the fourth quarter for the win. Senior Jesse King led the Buckeyes with four goals, while goalie Tom Carey made 13 saves.
“This was an important win,” Nick Myers, Ohio State head coach, said. “We have been in a couple one goal games this season and fallen short. Today we won the fourth quarter and came away with win number five. I’m proud of the resiliency our men showed. We are still in search of a full 60 minutes. We will be back to work this week.”
Ohio State will return to Ohio Stadium Saturday, as it hosts Denver at 1 p.m.
The Buckeyes and Pride were tied at two after the first quarter, with Hofstra tying the game twice. Sophomore John Kelly set up senior David Planning 52 seconds into the game. At 8:39, Dylan Alderman scored for the Pride for a 1-1 game. Buckeye freshman Colin Chell put Ohio State ahead for the second time at 5:40, scoring unassisted, but Hofstra got a goal from Korey Hendrickson at 3:39 for a two-all game. Shots were 8-6 in favor of Ohio State in the quarter and Carey had two stops for the Buckeyes, with Hofstra’s goalie making four stops.
The Buckeyes scored the first two goals of the second quarter to take a 4-2 lead, as King scored at 8:48 and Brown tallied at 7:17. The teams then combined for four goals in the final 3:35 of the half, with Hofstra scoring twice, to send the teams into the lockerroom tied at five. Sam Llinares drew the Pride within one (4-3) at 3:35 but King responded at 2:49 for a 5-3 Ohio State advantage. Off the next faceoff, Hofstra’s Kris Clarke set up Ryan Rielly for a goal nine seconds later and Llinares tied the game at 1:38. Ohio State outshot Hofstra, 10-7, in the quarter. Carey had three saves and Hofstra’s Chris Selva made four stops again.
Hofstra took its first lead of the game (6-5) at 12:22 of the third quarter on a goal from Mike Malave. The Buckeyes scored the next two goals to tie the game and regain the lead. At 10:08 junior Ryan Hunter set up Chell for a man-up goal to deadlock the score and Brown scored unassisted, driving the net after a Buckeye shot went out of bounds, at 7:54 for a 7-6 Ohio State lead. With 11 seconds left in the quarter Malave tallied again, tying the score (7-7) for the fifth time. Ohio State had 12 shots in the quarter, holding Hofstra to six. Carey had two saves in the Buckeye cage and Selva made three stops.
King scored at 12:51 and 7:27 of the fourth quarter, with the second goal man-up, for a 9-7 Ohio State lead. Llinares cut the lead to one at 6:23, but Ohio State was closed out the win. Carey had six saves in the quarter, with Hofstra outshooting the Buckeyes, 9-7.
The Buckeyes outshot Hofstra, 37-28, in the game. Carey for the Buckeyes and Selva for the Pride each played all 60 minutes and made 13 saves.
Hofstra had the edge in faceoffs (12-9) and groundballs (26-22). Graduate student Christopher May won 9-of-19 for the Buckeyes on the day and picked up a team-best five groundballs. He has won 90-of-127 (.709) faceoffs this season and lead Ohio State with 65 groundballs. Ohio State caused six turnovers, led by Evan Mulchrone with two.
Ohio State converted 2-of-5 man-up chances and Hofstra was 0-for-1. Ohio State has not allowed a man-up goal this season and the EMO unit is 10-for-26 (.385).
King, the Buckeyes’ leading scorer with 19 goals, 10 assists and 29 points, extended his point streak to 43 games (88g, 149p in the stretch) with a four-goal day. He is seventh in program history with 160 points. With two goals, Brown had his third multiple goal day of the year and is second on the team with 10 tallies this year, ranking second with 19 points. Chell had this third two-goal game for the Scarlet and Gray. Each of the Buckeyes’ last three games have been decided by one goal.
