COLUMBUS, Ohio — The No. 22 Ohio State women’s tennis team remains perfect in conference play this spring after defeating 28th-ranked Purdue, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes improve to 13-4 overall with the victory vs. the Boilermakers (10-3, 3-2 B1G) and are one of three unbeaten teams in the Big Ten with a 6-0 ledger in conference contests.
“We knew coming in Purdue would be tough,” Melissa Schaub, Ohio State head coach, said. “They’re tough every year. It feels good to get the win, but it showed us there are some things we need to work on and things that were exposed a little bit today in close matches. Overall, I’m really proud of our team to be undefeated in the Big Ten.”
Playing indoors, the 44th-ranked Buckeye duo of Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus got the ball rolling for the Buckeyes in doubles play, winning 8-6 on court one vs. Daniela Vidal and Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum. At No. 3, Olivia Sneed and Anna Sanford fell into a 5-0 deficit before going on a 5-2 run to pull the score to 7-5. The freshman tandem couldn’t hold on to the momentum and was defeated, 8-5. The doubles decision was then left to court two with Buckeye sophomores Miho Kowase and Ferny Angeles Paz leading Lynda Xepoleas and Natalia Davila, 7-6. In the next game, the duo battled to deuce and broke to clinch the doubles point for the Buckeyes with an 8-6 victory. Ohio State has captured the doubles point in all six B1G outings this spring and is 11-1 overall when claiming the first point of the match.
“We work really hard with doubles,” Schaub said. “It’s a big momentum switch when you get that doubles point under your belt and it gives you a good feeling heading out into singles. We work hard at it and the girls believe in their doubles teams and have fun as well.”
In singles, Niehaus notched the first win vs. the Boilermakers as she battled back in the second set to defeat Xepoleas in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, on court three. De Santis improved to 4-0 overall at No. 1 singles this spring with a 6-4, 6-0, victory vs. fellow Venezuela native Vidal. Sneed sealed the team victory with a second set tiebreaker victory vs. Andjela Djokovic on court six, 7-5, 7-6 (2).
After claiming the first set on court four, 7-5, Angeles Paz dropped the second set, 7-5, and the super tiebreaker, 10-2, to snap a six-match singles win streak. Kowase was forced in a super tiebreaker as well on court five after splitting the first two sets, 4-6 and 7-5. Tied at 9-9 in the super tiebreaker vs. Krisztina Kapitany, Kowase dropped the next two points and the match, 11-9. Sanford closed out action for the Buckeyes and Boilermakers on court two vs. Bernard-Feigenbaum. The Westerville, Ohio, native rallied back from a first set setback before falling in a third set tiebreaker, 7-2.
Ohio State will continue B1G action this weekend vs. Indiana at noon Sunday in Columbus. The match will be played INDOORS at the Varsity Tennis Center.
