COLUMBUS, Ohio — Behind strong performances in doubles and singles, the No. 22 Ohio State women’s tennis team triumphed vs. 43-ranked Indiana, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes, who have won eight consecutive matches, remain undefeated in Big Ten Play with a 7-0 record and are 14-4 overall this spring.
Up next, the Buckeyes will travel to Austin, Texas, to compete against No. 32 Texas at 1 p.m. April 4 for the first meeting between the two schools.
Ohio State continued to dominate doubles in conference play as it took a 1-0 advantage heading into singles with wins on courts two and three. Sophomores Miho Kowase and Ferny Angeles Paz teamed up for the first Buckeye victory vs. the Hoosiers as they topped Alecia Kauss and Sarah Baron, 8-2, on court two. The duo is 6-0 in conference matches this spring. Serving for the doubles point, Sneed and Sanford tallied an 8-4 victory vs. Stephanie Smith and Shannon Murdy on court three to push the Buckeyes into a 1-0 lead vs. the Hoosiers. 44th-ranked Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus rallied back from a 4-1 deficit to take a 7-5 lead on court one before play was suspended.
The momentum continued for the Buckeyes in singles play as the squad notched five straight set victories vs. the Hoosiers. Junior Grainne O’Neill dominated Baron, 6-1, 6-3, on court six to tally the first point for the Buckeyes, while De Santis improved to 5-0 on court one this spring with a 6-4, 6-1, victory vs. Katie Klyczek. Sanford clinched the team victory as she topped Kauss, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.
Niehaus claimed her seventh-straight singles victory as she posted a 6-3, 6-3 win against Murdy at No. 3. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native leads the team with 14 singles wins and is 6-0 in conference singles matches this spring. Sneed dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Smith on court five while Kowase closed out action vs. the Hoosiers, adding the final point for the Buckeyes as she broke Paula Gutierrez to win the match, 6-1, 6-2, on court four.
The Buckeyes are one of three unbeaten teams in the Big Ten, including No. 12 Michigan and No. 37 Michigan State. Ohio State returns back home at 3 p.m. April 17 to take on the Wolverines before hosting the Spartans and Akron April 19 at noon and 5 p.m., respectively.
