COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 19 Ohio State women’s tennis team topped Penn State, 5-2, at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio, Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Buckeyes improve to 9-4 overall and 3-0 in the B1G. Donning their pink uniforms, the Scarlet and Gray hosted a silent auction, bake sale and post-match clinic to support the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.
Ohio State gained a 1-0 advantage after collecting the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Sophomores Ferny Angeles Paz and Miho Kowase took care of business first, defeating Devan McCluskey and Kimberley-Ann Surin, 8-5, on court two. Sophomores Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus, ranked as the No. 24 doubles team in the latest ITA poll, followed suit as they topped Victoria Kisialeva and Dasha Sapogova, 8-5, on court one to clinch the doubles point. The freshman duo of Anna Sanford and Olivia Sneed led 6-4 at No. 3 when play was suspended. The Buckeyes are 8-1 when claiming the doubles point, including 3-0 in conference play, this season.
Playing at No. 1, Sanford battled to a 7-2 tiebreaker victory in the first set before cruising to a 6-2 victory in the second set to earn the first win for the Buckeyes in singles play. Down 2-3 in the first set, Kowase rallied to win the next four games on court four and claim the first set, 6-3. Kowase earned the third point for the Buckeyes with a second-set tiebreaker victory, 7-3.
Sneed lost a match for the first time in her collegiate career, falling to Jacqueline Zuhse in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, on court six. She moves to 11-1 overall and 5-1 this spring. Reigning B1G Athlete of the Week De Santis posted a three-set heartbreaker loss, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Kisialeva at No. 2 to give the Buckeyes a 3-2 edge vs. the Nittany Lions. Angeles Paz clinched the Buckeye victory with a three-set win on court five, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2. Niehaus closed out the match with a thrilling come-from-behind victory on court three, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, to earn her 10th singles win of the spring season.
Up next, Ohio State will travel to face Rutgers March 20 before squaring off vs. Maryland and UMBC March 22. The Buckeyes return to Columbus to host Purdue at 3 p.m. March 27. The Buckeyes have won 16 of the last 17 matches at home.
