COLUMBUS, Ohio – Playing in a front of a home crowd at the Varsity Tennis Center, the No. 19 Ohio State women’s tennis team (6-4, 0-0 B1G) fell to sixth-ranked Baylor, 4-0, Sunday. The loss snapped a 14-match win streak at home for the Buckeyes, tying the program record set in 2002.
Baylor took the early lead in the match, claiming the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. The sophomore tandem of Ferny Angeles Paz and Miho Kowase dropped a 6-1 decision to Ema Burgic and Leolia JeanJean on court two, while Grainne O’Neill and Anna Sanford, who were tied at 2-all with Kiah Genertte and Theersa Van Zyl early in the match, fell to the Lady Bears duo, 6-2, on court three. At No. 1, 24th-ranked Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus led 5-3 vs. Blair Shankle and Rachael James-Baker when play was suspended.
In singles play, the Scarlet and Gray suffered losses in the first three matches off the court. O’Neill was defeated by Kelley Anderson on court six, 6-2, 6-1, while Sanford fell in straight sets to 23rd-ranked Burgic at No. 1, 6-3, 6-0. No. 88 JeanJean tallied a 6-1, 6-3, victory vs. Kowase to seal the Baylor victory vs. the Buckeyes. De Santis, Niehaus and Angeles Paz did not complete their singles matches.
Ohio State will remain at home to open its conference slate vs. Northwestern at noon Friday at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio.
