COLUMBUS, Ohio -In its first conference match of the spring season, the No. 22 Ohio State women’s tennis team prevailed vs. 28th-ranked Northwestern, 6-1, at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio. The win marks the first victory for the Buckeyes vs. the Wildcats since April 13, 2003, a 4-3 home win for the Scarlet and Gray.
The Buckeyes, who have won 15 of their last 16 matches at home, battled to take a 1-0 lead vs. the Wildcats with wins on courts two and three in doubles play. Freshman Anna Sanford and junior Grainne O’Neill notched the first win for the Buckeyes, defeating Alex Chatt and Brooke Rischbieth, 8-3, at No. 3. The sophomore tandem of Ferny Angeles Paz and Miho Kowase prevailed vs. Rheeya Doshi and Lok Sze Leung, 8-6, on court two to claim the point for the Buckeyes. At No. 1, the Buckeye duo of sophomores Sandy Niehaus and Gabriella De Santis were locked in a tiebreaker with Alicia Barnett and Erin Larner, 6-6, when play was suspended.
Angeles Paz earned the first win for the Buckeyes in singles competition as she topped Rooney, 6-0, 6-2, on court five. Niehaus collected her eighth win of the dual season with a 6-2, 6-2, victory vs. Leong on court three. At No. 2, Sanford triumphed in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to clinch the Buckeye victory.
O’Neill added another point for the Scarlet and Gray as she posted a 7-6, 6-1, victory on court six vs. Doshi. At the No. 1 position, De Santis took the momentum from a first-set tiebreaker victory to win the second set vs. Barnett, 7-5, to give the Buckeyes a 6-0 advantage. Playing for the sweep, Kowase battled and fell in a super tiebreaker, 10-7.
Up next, the Buckeyes travel to Champaign, Ill., to take on Illinois at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
