COLUMBUS, Ohio – Taylor White, a catcher/outfielder on the Ohio State softball team, has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced today.
White led the Buckeyes with a .583 average this past weekend at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, recording seven hits in 12 at-bats, including two multi-hit games. In a 10-8 come-from-behind win over UNLV, she went 3-for-3 with three RBI and four runs scored. She also delivered the go-ahead hit, a triple to right field that gave Ohio State a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. White also hit a solo home run in the fifth inning against the Rebels.
Against No. 12 UCLA, White reached base safely in all three of her plate appearance, collecting two singles while also being hit by a pitch. The freshman from Granada Hills, Calif., has hit safely in all 12 games this year, the fourth longest hitting streak in school history.
“Taylor has made an immediate impact this year. I just love her gritty style of play and she sets a tone with her energy,” said head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly. “Her confidence at the plate, speed on the basepaths and versatility on defense make her a true five-tool player. With her potential, the sky is the limit.”
On the season, White is hitting .474 with nine runs scored, eight RBI, five stolen bases, three home runs and a .789 slugging percentage. She currently ranks sixth in the league in batting average, eighth in slugging, 14th in on-base percentage (.524) and 14th in total bases (30). Defensively, she has started three games in left field, five games at catcher and four times been the designated player.
White and the Buckeyes are back in action this weekend when they travel to Auburn, Ala. For the Wilson/Demarini Classic. Ohio State faces Connecticut (2:30 p.m. CST) and No. 17 Auburn (5:00 p.m. CST) on Friday, followed by a contest with Samford (7:15 CST) on Saturday and SIU-Edwardsville (11:30 a.m. CST) on Sunday. The Buckeyes are 9-3 overall and off to their best 12-game start since 2009.
