PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Despite multiple hit games from freshman Taylor White and senior Keelia Nester, the Ohio State softball team (9-2) dropped an 8-0 decision to No. 12 UCLA (12-3) on Saturday at the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
White, who has hit safely in all 11 games thus far, had an infield single in the second inning and single through the left side in the fourth inning. The native of Granada Hills, Calif., is now batting .500 on the year (17-for-34). Nester, who hit over .700 last weekend at the Maverick Invitational, singled twice (once in the third inning, once in the fifth).
The Bruins scored twice in the first inning off starting pitcher Alex DiDomenico, getting a RBI double by Stephany LaRosa and run-scoring single from Brittany Moeai. UCLA tacked on another run in the second inning thanks to Ally Carda. UCLA extended the lead to 6-0 in the third inning thanks to three runs of four hits off reliever Lena Springer, who gave up a RBI single to Kylee Perez and a two-run home run to Maddy Jelenicki.
The Buckeyes loaded the bases in both the fifth and sixth innings but were unable to push across any runs. In the fifth, Anna Kirk started out with a walk, followed by two straight strikeouts, but a Erika Leonard single through the left side prolonged the inning. Nester then singled up the middle, but Conrad grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the threat.
Ohio State put UCLA into another conundrum in the sixth, starting out with White being hit by a pitch with two outs. Kirk then singled to third and Maddy McIntyre walked, but UCLA pitcher Johanna Grauer struck out Saibene.
The Buckeyes conclude play at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic tomorrow at 9 a.m. PST (noon EST) against Utah.
