PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Ohio State rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings, but eventually fell 10-7 to Utah in is finale of the 2015 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
Trailing 7-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Buckeyes’ rally started with a single by Caitlin Conrad, who then advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop. Taylor Watkins then singled to third base and Conrad was eventually driven home by Prantl, who singled to first base. A Taylor White single loaded the bases and an Anna Kirk walk made the score 7-5. A wild pitch scored Prantl to make the score 7-6, and Jayla Saibene sent a sacrifice fly to the deepest part of left centerfield, forcing the outfielder who caught the ball to fall out of play over the fence. The sacrifice fly scored White, tying the game at 7-7. Unfortunately, the Buckeyes couldn’t plate the winning run, as Leonard fouled out to the catcher to end the inning.
Utah responded in the top of the eighth with three runs on two hits, keyed by a double from Bridget Castro, which scored two runs. The Utes added an insurance run on a Anissa Urtez single to right field. In Ohio State’s eighth, the Buckeyes went down in order.
Utah took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to just one hit and a Buckeye error. In the third inning, the Utes added three more runs on two hits and another Ohio State error, all of which came with two outs. Ohio State came right back in the bottom of the third, however, with two runs of four hits, including back-to-back singles from Saibene and Leonard, a two-run single by Conrad and a Keelia Nester single. The inning ended, however, with the bases loaded.
The score remained 5-2 until the bottom of the fifth when a Watkins tripled led off the inning. She eventually scored on a passed ball. In the sixth, Utah got a solo home run from Hannah Flippen, making the score 6-3 and went ahead 7-3 in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Shelby Pacheco.
In the circle, three different pitchers made appearances – starter Olivia O’Reilly went 3.2 innings (both as a starter and in relief), giving up two earned runs while striking out one. Shelby Hursh and Lena Springer both came on in relief and combined to give up three earned runs in 4.1 innings. At the plate, Conrad went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored while Watkins was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Taylor White also extended her hitting streak to 12 games.
Ohio State returns to action on Friday, Feb. 27 when it travels to Auburn, Ala. for the Wilson/Demarini Classic. The Buckeyes face Connecticut at 1 p.m. and host Auburn at 5:30 p.m.
