ARLINGTON, Texas – A four-run sixth inning by host UT-Arlington lifted the Mavs to an 8-5 victory over Ohio State on Saturday evening at Allen Saxe Field on the campus of UT-Arlington. The loss snaps a six-game winning streak for Ohio State as the Buckeyes are now 6-1 on the season.
Ohio State got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, as Caitlin Conrad led off the game with a triple and eventually scored with Cammi Prantl reached on an error by the second baseman. With two outs, Anna Kirk reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, giving Ohio State runners at first and third, but Taylor White lined out to shortstop to end the inning.
The host Mavs threatened to score in the bottom of the first after two walks put runners on first and second with one out. DiDomenico managed to get back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat, however, including one of UTA’s clean-up hitter, Mya Anderson.
In the top of the second, lead-off batter Erika Leonard was hit by a pitch and Jayla Saibene walked, setting up Keelia Nester, who sacrificed pinch runner Cassidy Clough and Saibene to third and second, respectively. However, Conrad lined out and Taylor Watkins grounded out to end the threat.
UT-Arlington once again had momentum in the bottom of the third, getting back-to-back singles, putting two on with nobody out. A fly out in foul territory was the first out of the inning, and a Conrad-to-Kirk-to McIntyre put out at second completed the double. The inning ended with a pop up to Saibene.
After a lead-off single in the bottom of the fourth, UTA’s Meghan Michelle sent a two-run home run just over the right centerfield fence, giving the Mavs a 2-1 lead. DiDomenico escaped the inning without any further damage thanks to a fly out, fielder’s choice and strikeout.
Anderson extended UT-Arlington’s lead to 4-1 on a two-run home run, her sixth of the year, to left field with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Relief pitcher Shelby Hursh then got back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
The Ohio State offense erupted for four runs in the top of the sixth, started off on a single from Keelia Nester. Caitlin Conrad then followed with a single, scoring pinch runner Kirstie Fehrenbach. Conrad stole second and Nester scored on a passed ball, making the score 4-3. Watkins then got the Buckeyes’ biggest hit of the game, a two-run home run to right field to give Ohio State a 5-4 lead.
UTA came right back in the bottom of the sixth with four runs, keyed by a bases loaded single and two-run double that gave the Mavs a 8-5 lead. DiDomenico came back on to record the final two outs of the inning.
The Buckeyes wrap up play at the Maverick Invitational tomorrow at 9 a.m. EST against Buffalo.
