COLUMBUS, Ohio – Playing outdoors at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta, Ga., the No. 27 Ohio State women’s tennis team (5-2, 0-0 B1G) clinched its second-straight win of the weekend, defeating No. 19 Georgia Tech (2-2), 4-3. The Buckeyes, who shut out No. 31 Tennessee Friday on the road, claimed the doubles point and three singles matches against Georgia Tech en route to their third victory vs. a ranked opponent this spring.
Ohio State, which is undefeated when winning the doubles point, captured the doubles point for the fifth time this season vs. Georgia Tech. The freshman tandem of Olivia Sneed and Anna Sanford notched a 6-2 victory on court three vs. Natasha Prokhnevska and Johnnise Renaud. 25th-ranked Sandy Niehaus and Gabriella De Santis fell 6-3 at No. 1 to Kendal Woodard and Paige Hourigan. Battling for the doubles point, the sophomore duo of Miho Kowase and Ferny Angeles Paz downed Rasheeda McAdoo and Alexis Prokopuik, 6-2, to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 edge heading into singles.
Playing against ranked opponents, Sanford and De Santis both fell in straight sets to put the Yellow Jackets ahead 2-1. Sanford lost 6-3, 6-4, on court one to No. 54 Hourigan, while De Santis posted a 6-1, 6-3 defeat to No. 68 Renaud at No. 2. Despite dropping the first set, 125th-ranked Niehaus evened the score at 2-all with a third-set tiebreaker victory vs. Prokhnevska, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5). Kowase battled and fell in two tiebreaker sets to McAdoo, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5), to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-2 advantage.
Sneed rallied after dropping a first-set tiebreaker to win in three sets, 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-4, vs. Prokopuik at No. 6 to swing the momentum back toward the Buckeyes, tying the score at 3-all. Sneed improves to 5-0 this spring and 12-0 overall. With the match on the line, Angeles Paz prevailed in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, vs. Megan Kurey on court four to earn the Buckeye victory.
Up next, the Buckeyes are set to compete in the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic Feb. 20-22 in Montgomery, Ala. Ohio State returns to the Varsity Tennis Center March 1 hosting Baylor.
