COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 27 Ohio State women’s tennis team (4-2, 0-0 B1G) shut out No. 31 Tennessee at Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tenn., to earn their second victory vs. a ranked opponent on the road this spring. The win marks the third shutout of the season for the Buckeyes and the first on the road as well as the second-straight victory vs. the Lady Volunteers.
The 25th-ranked sophomore tandem of Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus topped Tennessee’s No. 30-ranked tandem of Laurence Guevremont and Eve Repic, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Miho Kowase and freshman Olivia Sneed paired up on court three to defeat Tiffany Tavares and Ashlee Boles, 6-4, and clinch the doubles point for the Scarlet and Gray. The Buckeyes are 4-0 when winning the doubles point this spring.
No. 125 Niehaus notched the first singles win for Ohio State, posting a 6-4, 6-3 victory on court three vs. Victoria Olivarez. Sneed remains undefeated after taking down Boles, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6, improving to 11-0 this season. Playing on court one for this first time this spring, sophomore Gabriella De Santis prevailed vs. Joanna Henderson, 7-5, 6-3, to seal the Buckeye victory.
Kowase tallied her team-high sixth victory this spring with a straight-set win vs. Tavares, 6-3, 6-3, on court five. Sophomore Ferny Angeles Paz posted her first dual match victory of the spring as she defeated Guevremont, 6-4, 6-4, on court four. After losing the first set, freshman Anna Sanford triumphed in three sets to secure the shutout for the Scarlet and Gray on court two, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.
The Buckeyes remain on the road and will play Georgia Tech at 1 p.m. Saturday in Atlanta, Ga.
